After more than seven decades researchers now have the information and the technology to explore the sunken USS Macon aircraft carrier. The aircraft, which was big enough to carry four planes, crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 1935 due to stormy weather between the Channel Islands and Moffett Field.
Once The Macon hit the Pacific Ocean it slowly sank for 40 minutes while the ocean’s currents dragged it far from the place where it originally impacted. The exact location of the aircraft was therefore not known until the late 1980’s when a fisherman accidentally found it by pulling up some of the aircrafts debris.
The aircraft has not been explored until now do to inadequate underwater equipment. A $10 million submarine will explore the aircraft taking 10,000 pictures over a 5 day expedition. The results of the exploration will be released in late September.
The coordinates of the aircraft will not be revealed to the public for fear of looters. No debris will be taken up from the wreck in order to preserve the ruins.
