Peacock Bass Fishing

Peacock bass have grown to be known as some of the hardest and toughest fighting freshwater game species in the world. The bass are known for their hard and explosive strikes that will make any fly fisherman or plug fisherman’s jaw drop.

Florida Peacock Bass can be found in your local lakes and canals. The Peacock bass was first introduced to South Florida in 1984 by the Florida Freshwater Game and Fish Commission. Because of South Florida’s warm waters, Peacock bass survive and flourish like no other place.

There are four distinct species of peacock bass, although some biologist says there may be 2 or 3 time that many. It should all be noted that the peacock bass is not truly a member of the bass family at all. However there are many similar traits to the largemouth bass. The most obvious difference between the peacock bass and all other bass is the amazing color variety the peacock bass offers.

Some of the biggest peacock bass can be found in Venezuela, Brazil, and Peru and a few other areas of South America.

  • Speckled Pavon
  • Butterfly Pavon
  • Butterfly Variant
  • Royal Pavon
Fishing for Peacocks

Peacock bass are notorious for busting top water plugs and live bait such as shiners. In South Florida, many anglers will use shiners when they want a sure bet to catch a peacock bass. It is fun to even through out live baits to where the peacocks are and watch them attack the baits with force.

Fly Fishing for Peacock Bass

Fly fishing for peacocks is extremely effective. They become aggressive and will attack your fly in a matter of seconds and you can braces yourself for a tough fight. You will definitely need a rod with some backbone such as a 10 weigh rod, but you can go lighter if you are experienced. Flies that resemble minnows and other native fish of the area are your best bet.

The all tackle IGFA world record for a pecock bass is 27.0 pounds caugh in Rio Negro, Brazil 12/4/94.
