thanks for the grats I was being a little sarcastic you guys get too caught up in the hype you can't catch fish if ther not there. as for the guy asking about hook sets 2 tandem or 2 offset(180) i haven't seen much difference.

I dont want to flame you out but I'd like you to think about what you are saying. Wahoo hit at speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour and you think that the difference of trolling 8 mph and 16 mph will rip their lower jaw off? And does hook size, drag setting and stretchy mono vs wire or power pro factor into this discussion? You didnt mention it and I'd think that they were atleast as important as boat speed with respect to hook set and damage to the fishes mouth. My boat speed varies with conditions (usually between 8 and 12 mph) but my drag and downrigger releases are very tight-I once broke a tunas neck (literally) when he hit a bait while I was wahoo fishing. And I know people that catch wahoo with no rod and reel, just planers tied to the boat-Essentially hand lining them in after the strike. When that fish hits there is no stretch or give at all.

I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has ever had a wahoo's lower jaw torn apart-If so Id love to hear the details so I could reconsider my position. I also want to point out that double rigged mullet, a favorite natural bait of many fisherman when targeting wahoo, have both hooks pointing down.
I'm not sure what you mean by flame me out but if your talking about skip jacks it's common to break there necks as for wahoo 20 lbs and under commonly break there necks w/ high speed never seen a fish over 30 break its neck.every thing makes a difference but you wont rip it's jaw off!Think about what you said when you mentioned you know guys who hand line em in.

Savanna-I think you misunderstood my post. I was questioning another poster who said that trolling fast with the hooks pointing down could rip their jaw off. I have never seen that in my experience and wondered how the difference in speed between high speed trolling and normal speed could make such a difference given the speed that wahoo hit at. You should re-read my post-I think you are agreeing with me.

Aquaphisics will push your 0 degree hook's point up in the 12 o'clock position at high speeds...Hooks in the 12 o'clock position are ready for the Wahoo's boney upper jaw...You'll hit a bullseye most of times w/ hook placement per Wahoo's mouth...Regardless of were the hooks land, I want them in the Wahoo's mouth.

I prefer HS lures over bait for a couple of reasons....Lures = Cover more grounds at HS...Limited speed with dead bait....HS can trigger their feeding instinct at times....Hook placement can be set so bottom hook point sets just beyond lures length...No more short cut offs like you get with Ballys...No more washouts....No more rigging/carting around dead baits...PLASTEEEEEK ALL THE WAY.....DARE TO COMPARE.

Where exactly is a fishes neck located?????? Wahoo commonly strike their prey in their mid-section and try and cut them in half. For this reason two hooks can be good, since you are getting one towards the center of the lure. When rigging wahoo lures with single hooks I think you are better off positioning your hook bend inside the skirt (about 2/3 of the way back) instead of like you would rig a tuna lure with the hook as far back as you could get it. Again this is all based on the theory of the mid-section bite. Just another opinion, works for me!

Default Wahoo Rig

I always use the same rig for wahoo and it never fails me. I use a double trouble 10/0 zero degree hook from quick riggs rigged with cable and I always pull Streakers by Get Bent Lures GET BENT LURES. For the price you simply cant beat em.

We ran over to Bimini on saturday and nailed 4 wahoo along the ledge high speed trolling with this set up. The largest was 52 pounds and the others were between 35 and 40. We noticed Mahi jumping in our wake while high speeding as if chasing the lures, but none of them hit. we figured they couldn't catch them. But we slowed down for the last hour dragging the same setup and picked up three Mahi. One nice bull.
