Default I Want Wahoo

I'm from California and have been fishing my whole life. My cousin and I have caught (and released) all the big game fish EXCEPT WAHOO!! I mean, wahoo have really tormented us.

We usually go out of baja california but have decided that maybe we need to go somewhere else to catch wahoo.

Where and when do you recommend that we go to finally catch our first wahoo?

I'm sure these boards have already answered this question but thanks for your responses

Default best wahoo fishing

Some of the best wahoo fishing in the world is San Sal in the Bahamas. They are large and plentiful and the best time is now orwinter time//

Reefling, I like / respect Ernie on Baby Grand,. He is a GREAT captain, and has some AWESOME days on the troll. If someone asks for a good charter out of LWI, Ernie (Baby Grand), Boomer (Boomerang)& Stan are all VERY good options.

But to tell people to expect 14 to 22 fish locally on "secret #'s, is mis-leading IMHO
Conditions change daily, & fish MOVE following bait & migratory routes etc.
IE Ernie may bang 10 or 12 fish on a rip one day, and it is gone 4 hrs later.

Ausum, you are 100% correct. San Sal is the MECCA for LARGE fish.
Have boated several in 80-90lb range, but the 100lb fish eluded us when the sharks moved in & left 42lb head.

Great, I really appreciate all of your responses.

Catching an 80-100 lber would be awesome, but is San Sal also the place to fish in terms of quantity of wahoo? Also, for those of you who have fished there, do you have any recommendations in terms of boats/captains/hotels?

E-Money and Palm Beach also sound like a good option. When is the best time to fish for wahoo out there? I've heard that they run more in the fall time?

Again, thanks for all of your help. I think my cousin and I are the only ones who get disappointed hooking into a striped marlin or sailfish in cabo because what we really want is dorado, tuna (caught a lot of both) and WAHOO (NEVER CAUGHT).

BMW:

san Sal is like the superbowl of LARGE wahoos.
Sharks are FIERCE, but come March there are 80++lb yellowfin Tuna and HUGE dorados to keep you busy.

Only 2 places to stay.

1)Club Med
NICE place, cute foreign (european / french) girls comprise the bulk of staff

2)Riding Rock
Pretty much like a Motel 6

Dude, if you scuba dive, the diving is UNREAL. 100+ vis on good days & plenty to see.

The main thing you need to do is line up a boat well in advance.

Tuna Tango, Trey Rhynes or maybe look up Emery Black "The boogeyman" for local charter.

There is a guy named Floyd that was running trips on a Catamaran hull in San Sal as well.

If you get the chance to go late feb thru spring GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Emery is a good family friend and a HELL of a good fisherman. Look him up and say that one of Wahoo Dan's grandsons recommended him.

Remember when I said to be 'careful' about telling folks to expect to catch large #'s of "legal" wahoos off S Fl. (3-7 fish a day, sure, but for 15-20 on regular basis, go to the islands or VA mon.

Check out this pic that showed up on Fl sportsman.
