Default Ahoy Pirate Steve

Hey Steve:

Pardon the pirates welcome, but welcome to the forum and thanks for posting that really big Wahoo photo(s).

Hey, I have been browsing the web on Rum Cay as a possible vacation destination at some point in time.

Do you have any input or suggestions about this Cay?

Also, did you travel over in your own boat or was this a vessel that you chartered based/not based out of Rum Cay?

I was also curious about commute time if you are making way by just going slow to get there.

Have fun browsing this site. There is a lot of good stuff here; and Mike is working on making it better all the time. RT

Hey RT,

Rum Cay is my absolute favorite island in the bahamas. They have nice little cottages there and two larger ones that are all more than you'd expect from a little marina in the south bahamas. I guess they are slowly adding a few docks and what-not as well. The fishing is great and relativley close to Summner Point. We only troll lures over there adn our best day since we've been going there(5yrs. now) has been 4 for 7 on blues, with one MONSTER that ended breaking our 80 rod and dying deep. We bring our boat there every time but its hard to tell ya about communte time because we usually fish the HMY billfish blast in the Abacos then slowly make our way down there stopping at harbor island, hawks nest....etc. Its a great island! Gimmie a shout when ur back on here if you'd like to know anything else

Default Big ONE !

Ok, okay I'll settle this account.
That monster Wahoo is a 124 pounder. It was caught off St John USVI by the crew on "Gone Ketchin" about 4 years ago. Captained by none other than Capt Wally Leopold.
I know this cause Wally was a guest at my Fiancee's house in St Croix 2/19/06 I showed him this web site and was telling him how great a site it is. Lo and behold he said "I know that fish, we caught off of Gone Ketchin ! "
We boated a 100 lb Blue Marlin on Saturday on our trip over, which was released. Tomorrow we head back to St John / Lovango Cay and will do more Wahoo hunting on the way.

Default You Old Dog !

Tim
Why Jeeezsus Chripes ! I never thought I'd hear from a land lubber like you on this forum. Hell half the fish we use for bait would be trophies for you boys fishing the lakes and rivers !
Yep your right, I needed my own gear alright. Santa was good to me ! The Blue we landed last week was on Wally's boat so we were using his gear, not mine.
Now I sure hope Ole Wally L won't read your message, other wise you'll be looking for somewhere else to stay on your visits to the Islands. Not to mention what your wife would say about dissing her Daddy !

Default Rum cay

Rum cay is 200 miles south of Nassau. It depends on the speed of your boat but you can stop at a number of marines onthe way there. As of last year, there were no commercial flights there. You would have to charter a plane or do it on your own boat..I have been there a numberof times and if you have any other questions, please let me know Ausum 2

Careful, it could be Escolar. Sometimes its Albacore but everytime I've asked at a restaurant they've told me Escolar. I always pass on consuming this fish... Escolar can have a nasty side effect:

The gastrointestinal symptoms, called "keriorrhoea", caused by these wax esters may include oily orange diarrhea, discharge, or leakage from the rectum that may smell of mineral oil. The discharge can stain clothing and occur without warning 30 minutes to 36 hours after consuming the fish. The oil may pool in the rectum and cause frequent urges for bowel movements due to its lubricant qualities and may be accidentally discharged by the passing of gas. Symptoms may occur over a period of one or more days. Other symptoms may include stomach cramps, loose bowel movements, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

Here's a 95.5 pounder. I'd love to see anything in the 120 range.

ECA, white tuna is escolar in a sushi bar, don't eat to much or you'll be on bowl for quite awhile There is a white meat tuna fish known as true albacore or longfin tuna, it's what you buy in the can. I here they're killin em in the Hudson Canyon this time of year.
