Last week at the SSC meeting, Capt. Ron Schatter provided a nice talk about some of his Wahoo fishing techniques (among other things), particularly focusing on large fish and high speed trolling methods.
One of his recommendations, or at least his personal preferences, was to use a cigar weight, 1,2 or 4 lbs that featured a molded in-line cable. This was primarily intended to avoid cut-offs as a result of the Wahoo that occassionally strikes at the weight; in addition to true tracking at higher trolling speeds and overall line integrity. I have seen this style weight sold on-line at Capt. Harry's out of Miami. http://www.captharry.com/lures-lures-wtroll.html (32oz. $11.25) Is anyone familiar with any other local tackle shops that stock this style cigar weight ??? I have always used wireline-to-weight-to-mono-shock or mono-to-weight-to-mono, and have not been cut-off yet, but no teeth marks on weight either. But I did like the preference and the rational behind it. Other articles written about Wahoo trolling indicate a potential weak link at the brass loops on the cigar weights, which a continuous wire cable through the weight, eliminates that possibility of failure. There is a poll attached to this article if you would like to respond to your typical Wahoo rig set-up using cigars weights. It would be very interesting to tally many angler's preferences on this subject. RiskTaker |

The weights with or without cables already molded in are available at LMR bait and tackle in Ft Lauderdale. I personally prefer to buy the ones without the cable because eventually the molded cable starts to fatigue at the weight and when that happens they are shot. If you assemble them yourself you can easily replace the cable. By the way, we fish all cable from the snap swivel above the weight to the lure leader which is also cable. presently I am working on a way to eliminate the snap from our 2 monofil rigs and replacing it with some less noticeable connection. We presently use only black ball bearing swivels but even then we do get chopped off now and then, it seems wahoo like the taste of lead weights and snaps (tee hee).
