We've gotten a lot of calls about the 2nd leg of the Wahoo Challenge. For whatever reason, guys are excited about leg #2. Here are some answers to common questions I have been getting:
Q: What's the depth at Sunrise Resort? A: 6' at low tide. Q: Is there fuel at the marina? A: Yes, they have gas and diesel and will accomodate our schedule. Q: Is there an after-party on Saturday after the awards? A: No. We have an after-party Friday AND Saturday (maybe THursday too). Since we are so close to the casino, we're going to have the hotel van take us there as a group. Q: Rumors are the my team (Ocean Promotions) is going to fish during the tournament. Is this true? A: Flase. After the Bimini leg where I took out Charlie Levine from Marlin Magazine and got skunked, I do not think we are going to fish again. To add insult to injury, every single boat that went out caught 4 fish or more. Even a boat that was not in the tournament and went dolphin fishing caught wahoo. Team Ocean Promotions is oficially retired. If you have any more questions, just give us a call or shoot me an email. |

Bahamas Wahoo Challenge - Fishing Tournament
What does a quarter-pounder get you? Well, on this leg 2 of the Wahoo Challenge (fished out of Freeport, GBI) it makes all the difference to put you one place ahead, of not having that quarter pound. Wow, that is cutting it real close! Bear in mind this is the summation of weighing multiple fish by two teams. As of this post, I don't think that the results of the Freeport Leg 2 are posted yet on the link above. Maybe Tony will post them soon or provide a link to the Final leader board results. If not, I'll try to provide the link later on. I have to thank Tony Albelo for providing an opportunity for fishing forum members to participate in the Wahoo Challenge. This leg of the tournament was very interesting to say the least! From other posts you may see how he offered a Free Trip prize to a person that is the winner of a 100 word essay on how he/she thought, he/she would make a good team member to the HeaVEEweight crew, to perform certain pre-described tasks, etc. Turns out that I came in 3rd place (no prize winner) for this competition by forum voting of the finalists, yet ultimately got to be a part of the HeaVEEweight crew: due to ProfessorO spreading some of the wealth from his first place 100 word essay contest, to see how the best crews "in the seven seas" getter done. It was certainly a pleasure to meet the teams and become acquainted with some of the crew. We'll share some "censored" details of the trip in later posts. If you want uncensored, you just have to be there. It was a lot of fun to have a role in this Wahoo tournament, with high performance crews, (with the exception of the "Slacker" team member; you know who you are, so you do not have to admit it publicly. )Stay tuned for some more tales from this epic adventure: including some inspiration of faith on the tales and merits of "The Legend".

Golfcane:
For the results, let's wait for Tony to publish the final listing so I don't confuse matters; because, I actually don't remember all the specific fish weights. Day 2, Liborio brought in a nice size fish and another boat caught none. Sunday crossing was indeed a dream crossing: cool weather, bright skies, smooth seas. And to top it all off we caught 2 more Wahoo around the Isaac light area, on the HeaVEEweight. One weighed a respectable 45 lbs. on the scale and the other was in the 30's. Now I can clearly understand why Bajakian appreciates Wahoo Sashimi so much. I don't know what I have been doing all my life, by cooking Wahoo ? I have prepared fresh Sashimi before but I guess I just haven't done it too much. OK, I am awakened and out of the fog now. Fresh Wahoo, Sashimi style is so good that I would actually now consider it a waste of fish, not to prepare the top loins Sashimi style: and cook only the scrapped pieces. ![]() Just bear in mind that the fish must be filleted neatly in order to get to the "top shelf" experience; and that part I have down well. We have been eating Sashimi for the past 4 days and likely still counting until the fresh supply is exhausted. Accompanied with: soy/ponzu saw, grated wasabi, pickled ginger, and even an ocassional dip in some toasted sesame seeds is a mighty fine way to dine. We even tried a make-do hot oil, using some olive oil and that specialty Vietnamese Chili-Garlic sauce (the one with the rooster on the label). Some guys commented how good that tasted although it was not my top preference. Oh, but I suppose you want to see the Tournament results: here you go. http://outdoorsbest.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=827688 However, before the dream day of fishing commenced and after the BWCL2 awards ceremony, and the wild and crazy time time at the casino, just one more prank had to be played on Bobby, (one of the crew on Liborio), around 3 a.m. But he had the second best laugh.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1yqfPQsQ2Y . You can be the judge of who laughed the most.

FYI... get a jar of roasted red peppers. Pureé the contents in a blender. Then drizzle a little on your wahoo sashimi. Along with a little wasbi, it's kind-of a sweet & hot combo flavor.

Nightcrawler,
Yes indeed, I made the trip and what a trip it was! We were all a bunch of Hooligans, but nice hooligans. If you follow the other links, you will see the story line, in more detail. Professor O was keeping close tabs on the weather and it was not looking very nice. So he called me at work about 3 p.m. to inquire whether I would still like to go. He had plenty of work pending and the "bum knee" may not hold up too well in tournament Wahoo fishing with the forecasted weather. So, I volunteered for the assignment. (3rd place, runner up made all of the difference.) Unfortunately, the weather forecast and crossing sea-state deterred multiple boats from this leg and whittled the expected 10-14 boats down to a die-hard group of 4, plus the tournament boat (5). So we had to make-do under the circumstances.... Regardless, Tony still strives to put on a great tournament. I can't wait for the next Island get-a-way adventure: I love Wahoo fishing, Island Style! ![]() P.S. - Tony finished the video of the actual fishing part of the trip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2nDs6J0B_c
