go with the bent butt . honestly i cant say why to do this but my best guess is that you would be fighting the fish out of the rod holder and the angle of the butt probalily puts less pressure on the rod so you have less a chance of breaking the rod . and also more IMPORTANTLY than the butt MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A SAFTEY LINE TIED TO THE ROD or youll be doing this ](*,)

bent butt is less stress on the gear and baits will ride a bit lower in the water

Ditto

Angle of your line hitting the water is better and it's a ton easier to fight a fish!

I agree with the points above. One consideration for straight butts though is the rod gives a little forgivness especially if using wire lines or braid. These have very little stretch and a good head shake can result in a thrown hook. Where you dont have the stretch of mono lines a good straight rod and take up some of this slack as it flexes and straightens.

Default Bent butt vs straight butts

If you are in the business of high speed trolling, the bent butt is the best option. Straight butts enable the rod to flex and snap the baits, sometimes causing hook fouling (hook gets wrapped around the line). When you are running 6 baits (or just 2 for that matter), the last thing you want to do is have to slow down to fix it. If your rod holder is 30 degrees, The added angle of the bent butt will put your rod close to parallel with the water line. This equates to no whip-lashing of the bait, and a better overall presentation. The game fish can better time the attack so you will have a better hook-up.
Tight Lines everyone!

Safety lines and bent butts fo sho. And make sure you get butts long enough to give the reel some height above the gunwales. I had a friend who showed up with the 50's and little bent butts, and the damn things barely locked in, and slipped out underway. Garbage...

The newer Aftco shorts solved that problem, by adding just a couple inches.

So-Lo has some extensions that you can place in the rod holder to help out the Stuart short butts to lock in. I have a couple of them that I shift around the boat....they also make the Swivel insert to turn any rod holder into a swivel base...pretty nice for the big hits or bottom dropping deep for swords..
Pretty inexpensive as well. 25$-55$

Get bent! But remember my words. When you are fighting the fish more on the reel than the flex of the rod, don't slow down too much. Good fish will leave you. You really have to keep the boat moving. Switch off angler if #1 gets tired, but don't slow down too much to gain line!

Stuart industries makes mini curves that are 21 inches instead of the standard 19 2SC. The model number is Z 2SMC. Semi custom and only about 15.00 more. Knowledgeable and very good customer service from them too 305 651 3474

Not long ago I took a kid from the make a wish foundation fishing we went a mile to get a spanish in on a spinner ...my hats off to any person that has a challenge before them and winning is someting I respect big time! I called a guy Grandma once fishing with Bruce Marler from Destin, fla once on a charter... he told me I had to reel in every fishthe rest of the day... I was young then and I went to sleep on the way back in... fishing is not no sissy stuff!

bent butts...swiveling rod tips on the corners....safety lines on all outfits.

Fish and/or weeds + 1-3lb trolling sinker + entire rig + sea conditions + reeling in at 5+kts = one tired angler....Nothing wrong with switching off anglers...many of teams do just that.

There is a cure to the tired angler syndrome:

Extended arms on the handle = larger rotation for the angler...less energy and more power....like night and day

If you already have the bent butts take some good advice as you have seen posted and use them remembering most fish will be fought out of the rod holder. If you have adequately heavy straight butts they work just fine and I have never broken one while high speed trolling. I do one thing to lower the line pull and that is by using 3 #64 rubber bands on each line and pulling them right at the water line. You can figure out how to do it on the boat you are fishing on. Any wahoo will snap them and then you are able to fight the fish standing up and not dragging them in with the rod in the rod holder. Lowering the line pull reduces the chances of the lures popping out of the water as they can do when pulled from a straight butt rod in the rod holder. Harry
