Yea this is pretty crazy I just came from there and it was pretty expensive @ 4.75 Gallon. Not liking the Bahamas too much.. Doing the tournament in Venezuela this year for Blue Marlin I can't wait to do that one at 15 cents a gallon of fuel. I can fish all day there and pay only 100 dollars probably to fill up my boat.

Just my .02 ..... We cannot compare England/Europe to our system..Apples and oranges.....Yes, their gallon of gas is and has been at $5.00 for the longest time and their taxes are definetely higher than ours, but their medical, transportation and pension system, to name a few, are also different from ours.(Not to mention their beer is cheaper.
) Is there corruption at high levels where the government is in cohoots with the oil companies? IMHO ABSOLUTELY....!!!!! Proof?? Hard to come by. ..... However, funny that when the barrel of oil goes up 1,2 or 5% today, the gas prices go up INMEDIATELY....Likewise, the oil price goes down, it takes a week before the price at the pump comes down a few pennies. Follow the market and you will see. Love my country but like Cert mentioned......There's room for improvement!!!... Coincidentally, in the last 7 years, the budget allocated to Research and Developement of alternative fuel went from billions of $$$$ to almost a negligible amt.......Conspiracy????? Maybe not. But, could it be called "CONFLICT OF INTERESTS" Hmmmmmm

I dont see us and europe as apples and oranges. More like two types of apples with differing tastes. Dont forget that we and our form of government are directly descended from England except that we got rid of the figurehead Monarch.
As far as their healthcare goes, my guess is that you have never gotten care there. I'd advise you not to get sick while you are there. They dont do kidney transplants or dialysis on anybody over age 55 (they let them die) and they dont have the kind of technology like MRI that we all take for granted here. They also dont have lawyers and malpractice suits. Its just another example of you get what you pay for. As far as alternative fuels go, they exist now. Are you driving a Hybrid car or a car that burns an ethanol gasoline blend? When everybody does that the price of fuel will come down. Just my 2 cents. |

As far as alternative fuels, Hybrids are not. (They help but still uses gasolina) However, in Brazil, in which is basically a third world country, they are 100% energy independent. 100%!!!!!..........The research money that was stop by our government was mainly aimed at Hydrogen and the likes. That just about stop on its track in the last seven years. Sad but true.....Good fishing!!!!! Hope to have a cold one w ya in the keys and smash this to a pulp. It's always good hearing from different sides.......Once again, respectfully!!!!!

The people that have the monopoly are the Arabs. They control the oil supply. If our oil companies werent paying a hundred dollars a barrel for crude oil, the prices would be less. Sure they are in it to make a profit. We all are. One of the great things about this country is the free enterprize system. Would you like it if someone in the government decided how much you can make doing charters? It is competition between entities that keeps prices down. It's the reason that phone prices keep dropping. And because there is no competition is the reason that the government regulates utilities and cable services.

As far as the "conspiracy" if there is one its got to be on a world wide scale. Its hard to believe that every country in the world has this conspiracy going on setting artificially inflated price. I think that the Arabs (OPEC) are the ones with the monopoly that set prices and our oil companies compete against each other at the pump. If one of them could get a larger market share by making 10 cents a gallon less, they would. But this is getting far from fishing. ( This thread started with me inquiring about the price of gas in the Bahamas. ) I am definitely up for having a cold one in the Keys or Bahamas with ya. Cheers!

Wow, I have heard of stories on both sides of the fence.
"Fly" Navarro mentioned, at the SFC/SSC, last night, that Diesel fuel was about $US 0.07 per gallon in Venezuela. Maybe, just for the lucky or brave. Another amigo, confirmed also that Gasoline was $BAH/$US 5.30 on Eleuthera just the other day and he has mentioned prices going to or exceeding, $7/gal. Perhaps this was the motivation for this thread in the first place. Some like to talk to communicate. I would like to believe everyone to be speaking the truth, as they are truthful people, from the best I can tell. So I can only say at this point: Venezuela is the BOM to attract diesel Yachts fishing attraction and the Bahamas is the place to go if you want to piss away money in fuel needs. Oh, but look at the Location. BTW - Diesel fuel is the easiest distillate to get out of petroleum crude oil, compared to gasoline. So the cost of delivery of Diesel should be substantially lower than gasoline, by far. So if you see higher prices for Diesel, over gasoline, then, I suggest you are in the wrong universe. Just a suggestion for those that are tolerating whichever way the banter waives. More on this later: May I suggest that you keep tabs on this subject matter, should your wallet be dependent on $cost/trip. Alan, Ya Mon! Go figure. It is all about the Bahamas: forget about Vhf 16. Internet hi-way Baby! I rang you.

We can continue this over a beverage. I'm drinking Tequila. If there is something that I can tell you or help you with, feel free to ask. I hold no secrets unless I was told in secret. Where are you in the Keys? I am going to fish the Tortugas at the end of February.

Obviously by the way you write you are far too intelligent to banter back and forth on this forum outside of the fishing arena. Your comments about foreign healthcare are right on unless you want to talk about countries like Sweden or Norway. I was a world traveler (for work) for 34 years and had many occasions where I needed medical care abroad. I have many stories to tell and none contain the words "I got better care abroad than at home".
Where is Ocean Ridge? I'm thinking the Keys but never heard of it. I'm always looking for fishermen to share with and trying to make new friends for fishing trips. I got back from the islands on the 18th and am leaving again next Tuesday. The wahoo fishing has been super. I'm fishing on a 54 Hatteras so weather isn't all that critical to us as we go in just about anything albeit alot slower than you do on your Venture (nice boat - super power). I'll post another report when I get back from this trip. |

Gas in Nassau rarely goes over $4.75
Goverment gets about $1.25 or so Guy than runs/rents the station gets .33 cents Local Esso/Shell/Texaco office gets .44 cents which is owned esso shell etc Also i know for sure that Esso (ON the Run) owns the buildings that sell the gas and charges the guys crazy rents , he has to sell coffee , groceries ,ice water etc to make profits. As soon as they fuel company sees you gaining margins or profits on other items in the station they bump the rents up. For the fuel to get to the islands Bimini, Berrys , Exuma, funny thing is it has to be pumped into a smaller barge style boat that is owned by guess who? all this amounts to big companies are flexing as they can because we are all spoilled , and refuse to make sacrifices. Someone will now, spin this and say that the Bahamain goverment should give up thier piece of the $4.75 but our tax system is based on import duties, that build our roads , schools , etc. They canot give it up, its structured in my opinion to tax the rich , if you can afford to run a V8 SUV you pay $110 to fill up , if you drive a toyota corrolla you pay $45. Goes back to the Dr. you pay for what you get. I know the feeling guys i drive an F150 V8 / My wife a Expedition and my fuel bill monthly for my cars is $500 plus not to mention at least 2 trips a month at $250 each in my boat to run from Nassau to Exuma for the day . |
