I decided to start a thread on this subject so as not to hijack other threads. What I'm curious about is what YFT tactics work for you (speed, spread, approach, etc) and lure selection.
Myself, I've learned that dark colored lures seem to perform well for me (other side of gulf stream off east central florida), especially if I can get them deep. My favorite lure is a dark colored Braid Little Speedy, followed by a 6" Todd's lure (chugger). I tie 80-100 lb mono/fluoro leaders directly to my main line with a small swivel down at the lure. I've had hits both close in and far back depending upon how stupid/hungry the fish are (I guess). That being said, there are a lot of other tactics that seem to work for other YFT hunters. I'd like to know what works for you. Thanks Chummer |

Skirted ballyhoos way the hell back work pretty well, especially during the day when the tunas are spooky. At night they tend to be more bold and will come right up to the boat. Sometimes I pull skirted ballyhoos behind birds, especially when they've got to be super far back. The little hoochie skirts with a bird built into them work well on the front of a ballyhoo too.
Out on the rigs I like to fish live hardtails hooked through the shoulder with an 11/0 jap hook, or the same hook through the mouth of a live flyingfish. Be careful to not brain the flier when you hook him. It's really easy to do. Live chumming out on the rigs or behind a shrimper works well if you've seen fish blowing up and have enough bait to do it. When you get the fish fired up you can fish them with freelined live baits or fish them on a slip-lead rig down 50 or 100 feet. All of these ways will work at different times. |

Yeah, I wish we had some rigs over here on the east coast of Florida. But it's all good fishing, anyway. Started this post to see if anyone else had any tactics they wanted to share. One tactic I heard about was using butterfly jigs after a school sounded. Been dying to try that one.
