Captain Ed Dwyer does it again. Sunday's charter caught 4 fish over 100lbs with a 142lb YFT as the stud. Check out Candy's report at Ticket Sportfishing Charters (pics should be on thier site soon).
Special mention to SFC's own "Sword Doc". Doctor Dave popped the 142lb slob after 2 hours of stand up on a 80. They had to poon the fish to land it.....how sweet is that !!

Johnny:
That is an interesting way to try fishing. Have you tried any of those specialty Bahamas lures for nighttime sword trolling? What would be your waypoint to, should you actually try that? West End? We have tried for Yellowfin Tuna twice in the past month. They have eluded us on both occasions. But we still have May and June. We did get a few Blackfins as well as a big Bull dolphin by targeting the boiling waters we have found. But those yellowfins, we just can't convince to get into the boat. At least not yet.

Nice tunafish. Did they not have any big bite Aftco gaffs onboard? Such a fish could have been brought over with a pair of those in the head without too much trouble, especially after a 2 hour fight. The fish likely wasn't still green and kicking ass at that point.
Again, nice fish. |

Unfortunately, I wasn't on board for this trip. The fish was caught on 80# leader, and they worried about losing the fish at the gaff due to a chaffed leader after such a long fight. A 142lb tuna will tug a bit when you wrap into the leader and pull her to the gaff.
They were thinking it was a possible port record (missed it by 12#) and didn't want to take any chances. Captain made a good call in my book. Still waiting for them to post the photos.

it was the late bite we scored the tunas btw....and yes the birds were workin

Boboe,
I said "Port" record, as in the largest tuna weighed in at Port Canaveral, Fl. Not "sport" record. We aren't as fortunate to get the 200#+ slobs like you do in the Gulf. Port record is 154#. Any fish at 100# is newsworthy in our waters. Your post did make me laugh

We scored 5 yellowfin between 50# and 60# on Saturday out of Canaveral. No Skipjack or Blackfin. We're eating good this week...

I plead careless reading
Port/sport. I haven't come close to a _S_port record or a _P_ort record before. I've caught yellowfin up to about 160 in the Gulf and I know they get bigger from photos and fish stories

Hey Ray. Yes, Capt. Ed is the man! Garrett, his mate rocks too.
I was completely shot after 2 hours. The leaders had to get pretty light at the end of the day to get the bite. 80# fluoro that was badly chafed with curly Q's by the end. I was sure it was going to pop. I had 21# of drag with my hands on and off the spool for extra drag during the circles. We were sure he'd pop it but had to go up in drag cause the front was coming and I was crapping out. They stuck him because I never popped his head up and if we had tried to hand line the wind on I think it would have popped. I caught my last bluefin in Hatters in January 2003 that want around 600#. We had an unlimited stick, 130, 400# top shot and a bucket harness in the chair. Six minutes till tag in, in 30 fathoms. This allison killed me! Way tougher than any bluefin or bigeye I've ever caught. Anyone agree that the big yft/allisons kick azz more than other tunas? Next time I'm staying on the bridge with the camera! It's a young man's game. Took me 2 days to be able to stand up straight! Let's go see if we can put some unsuspecting victim on a swordie when the dang wind quits blowing. Dave
