About 20 years ago, we caught a 138# YFT between WPB and West End. We had an old Hatteras then, she cruised at a wopping 15.5 knots...perfect for green machines. It was this time of year actually.
njoimia, what boat are you on? Did we ever meet in Cat? I've been fishing there for about 9 years. |

Good luck. Last time I was there, the bite was consistently going off at Devil's point, but traditionally Columbus point gets you more marlin shots. See Jimmy on the Damn Yankee. The name says it all ... good guy. He will let you know whats going on onshore and offshore. Tell him I was bashing him on the net.

I've never done it down south but baiting bluefins is one of the most beautiful sights in the entire world. We've baited schools of them off of glosta and p-town early in the season. When you're with someone who knows how, its the amazing. That article LHPfish posted is dead nuts on. As far as big tuna, go to the northeast. You may sit for 6 weeks fishing hard every day without a sniff then put 8 giants in the boat in 4 days. If money wasn't an issue, that's where you'd find me. But be forewarned, once you land a giant or two or 10, you've officially been ruined. There is no cure for full on hardcore bft addiction And i have to agree....43 merritt is the way to fly - my favorite boat ever

Wow! Thanks for all the good infromation guys. Never can be sure anymore, every where you go there is always a dozen people that say they're the best. I'm thinking Mexico might be my destination as i live on the West Coast, and its a shorter trip. However I would like to see lots of action over single big fish so mabye ill head to the carribean.

A sept or oct trip to the canyons off the coast of nj is hard to beat. yft, longfin albacore, dolphin and swords make for a great night. Most nights it's easy to load up on 60-100lb yellows with a few of the incidentals showing up. Last season saw a great number of really large albacore showing up in the catch. We boated one that weighed in at 87lbs. Last several years the swords have come back
on so strong that its almost a nightly occurence to tangle with one. IIf we targeted the swoeds with heavier leaders we would probably land more but we stick with the light stuff until we limit out on the yft's. No need to travel around the world when the good ole USofA has some of the best around. NE canyons, Outerbanks North Carolina and venice la (who needs anything else) GOD BLESS AMERICA Last edited by bigned : 05-08-2007 at 09:15 PM. |

COUG45. If your desire is to fish Mexico for large yellowfin, you're best bet would be to hook up with Capt Josh Temple down in Puerto Vallarta Prince Rupert Fishing Charters, Guided Salmon Fishing in Alaska - Prime Time Adventures, Prince Rupert BC If you would rather fish Cabo, I can attest that Capt. Jobe on the 42 Ocean NI MODO is a great fisherman. He lead my team to a tournament record 318 Yellowfin in the Tuna Jackpot last November. You can find him at Marlin, Cabo, Fishing Charters, Tuna, Dorado, Los Cabos Sportfishing Of the 2, I believe that Puerto Vallarta is more consistant.
Good luck and be sure to pump some serious iron to get ready for your trip. |

What a cool thread. I remember sweating out the flat calm days on Cat Cay. Never hooked up. Saw fish but always too flat. Grew up in the Northeast trolling for bluefins in June/July. They loved the flat wake on my dad's 36 topaz, 30 feet down the center was the sweet spot. BOOM! Coolest thing I ever saw! Miss that. Pray for 20kts out of the southwast in Cat, in the cockpit of a 43 Merritt. Amen!

Guadeloupe Island in Mexico. I was watching a documentary on great whites @ guadeloupe island and the reason they come there is because the Yellowfins migrate through there in the thousands. The good thing about fishing there is that the tuna are only 1-3 miles offshore. They had underwater footage of these huge 200+ tunas schooling up and being picked off 1by1 by the Great whites. Now im trying to find a charter out of Guadeloupe to go for tunas. Dont get guadeloupe island in the antilles confused with this guadeloupe island in mexico.

Disco Lady said it best...Bimini or Cat Cay
Love that area. Fished it for several years while my uncle Captained the "Bushwhacker".Just read (05/29/07) that the "Celia P" landed an 800+ lber, (I believe it was 850) Blue Fin Tuna, out if Cat Cay. Congrats to them. Now if that isnt big enough for you...then Palm Beach Florida Fishing Charters - No Problem Sportfishing Fleet

Danny (Boat named Marla)is the man down there. Last your my buddy Todd got a 406# YFT record off of the El Banco(Really called Corbitania bank) I also hooked some nice ones myself there. Also Josh Temple(guy with YFT Pics in IGFA books) works his grady there too in Punta Mita when not salmon fishing in VC. Bluefin I think that I would try and hit the Jan-Feb bite in So Carolina they come in close to shore there and I hear it's a real good time. So-Cal party boats are cool. They Albi's were going but have slowed down out of Dana I hear. If you do that go on the Royal Polaris with Frank Lepreste before he gives it up (I hear he is going to retire). 1st class long range trip. |

as far as big yellowfins go there are a few places to them. during the summer there is a huge bit down at puerto vallarta, mexico in addition to places like guadalupe island. the so cal long range fleet goes down there to target these big cow tuna. one of the popular captains in pv is josh temple, google him and you'll see some amazing pics and vid. another place that is not well known for big tunas is the west coast of oahu in hawaii during the summer months. last summer there was a pile of 200 lb tunas about 30 miles of the coast that measured a mile square, some boats were catching up to 16 of these big fish a day. unfortunately the pilot whales and false killers whales moved in and scattered the fish. another cow yellowfin place is south africa, i've seen some pretty impressive catches on bloodydecks from a guy down there.
