None yet it is still a little early. By mid december things should be starting to happen on the lump. I am wanting to make a fun trip this week so if the winds lay. I should be able to give you a report. If I can find the mullet the tuna should not be far.

Ahhh, Mulletron
Good luck on the fun trip. I am sure that you need it. I expect that the mullet are pretty unmolested this year!

Eddie and I went inshore fishing a few weeks back. We saw plenty of mullet skiffs and everytime we went by the commercial landing they were unloading piles of mullet. I bet there must of been 1000 plus mullet dead and floating down the jump. I am sure that the mullet fleet numbers are down but the mullet are still taking a beating.

I was hoping that them dang commercial netters had been blown out of business. That is one of the most senseless fisheries that I have ever witnessed.

I think about the waste evry time I pull up to a shrimp boat that is unloading it's nets. Later at the fish cleaning table the tuna's stomachs are full of shrimp, flounder, croaker, crabs and red snapper. Hopefully most of the spawning mullet got to where they needed to and had a good spawn.

Here is a copy of my fishing report from yesterday.
I did a fun trip on Thursday looking for some mullet run tuna. With the hurricanes the gillnetters numbers are down. So more mullet are making it to the gulf to spawn. But I did not find one school all day while offshore. I only had to make two throws of the net to load the livewell with 12-18" mullet. I fished all of the rigs that produce this time of the year. The first spot was a rig that I put a 130 and eight other tuna in the boat a few days ago. The sharks have taken over the rig. The first couple of mullet didn't last long at all. We did manage to pick up a couple of blackfin tuna. But we lost more to the sharks than we landed. From there we made a 20 mile run to the west only to find the same thing SHARKS. The next rig was only eight miles away and proved to be the least shark infested rig we hit. We put two yellows in the 30lb range in the boat on live hardtails. While the mullet went untouched. Broke out the jigs and quickly put eight blackfin in the boat and a bouns dolphin. We invited his two remaining buddies to join him but they were not interested. With the end of the day near we went in to try and find a few grouper. Well as you guessed it SHARKS again. So it was now time to head to the barn. There was one last rig on the way in the usualy holds some amberjack. They were there big time and hungry. We quickly put a four man limit in the boat. The big yellows eluded us that day. But it was sure nice to be on the water and fishing. |
