Default The corner from St. Lucie Inlet

Coming down to swordfish. Need some local knowledge from those that do this more often. Leaving out of St. Lucie Inlet, if the weather is good, is it worth the trip to run to the corner? I don't have a particular waypoint but wanted to chase tuna.

From St. Lucie, 50-60 nm's is a good estimate?

Sure would like to hit the corner and come back in the afternoon and make a couple of daytime drops and stay after dark if I need to.

What advice or info can you give me?

Thanks!

I love wahoo fishing but I am not going to check in. We have a good wahoo fishery in NE Florida so I can get my fill there. If tuna are scarce, may just stay on this side and swordfish. I thought I read that there were some tuna to be found? I did see the wahoo bite was heating up. I've caught 5 in my last 2 trips here and the season is way early right now. Spent half of each of those 2 days sailfishing.

So your recommending not wasting the time for tuna right?

I wouldn't that is more of a April-Sept fishery..But you never know..It wouldn't be my target right now..I'd go a lil further south and drop the boat in not so much of a run off jupiter or palm beach..

Your one of the reason's why people have trouble coming home.........

I guess it's pretty cool to reap all the benefits and their fishery and not pay ........

Default when the little blue 'Nor-Tech' boat catches you....

I hope you still have the same attitude to tell them you just don't want to check in... I am gonna be an ass here and tell you you'd better change your ways or you will not have a boat to even go wahoo fishing and sail fishing on.. plus you make it way harder for us to make our trips without any hassle... I hope you have a great trip if you go clear in and get back out and catch some tuna, wahoo and snappers... heck make two to three days of it and have fun.

I live in Stuart but run down off Palm Beach to start my drift. There is better bottom and usually more fish caught between Palm Beach and Jupiter. You also dont have to run as far to start fishing when off Palm Beach. There are numerous charts you can buy at any tackle shop that will show you the drop offs, canyons etc. Good Luck.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I think Jags point was that he was going to stay 12 nm off the bank to tuna fish, which is typical. To wahoo fish you obviously have to be up against the bank. He didn't want to deal with checking in to wahoo fish. That's the way I took it.

By the way...I agree with what Whiteout and Test are saying about not checking in.

The tooners are gone. Invest your fuel savings money into a Bahamian fishing liscence and clearance permit ($150<=35' / $300>35'). Check in at West End and bump the bottom for some grouper and snapper right out front then return to Palm Beach in time for a night drift (60 miles).
You also get a chance to sight fish for some phins and hoos on the crossing.

Or, just stay off PB and daytime sword drop and night drift and save the money and stay out of Fox Hill Prison....your call

I read it the same way, he did not want to Wahoo Fish, he can do that at home.. I ran back from Walker's 2 weekends ago and not a bird to be found off the bank, we were ready with Tuna rigs but saw nothing fishable.. Saw a flock of ducks and thats about it.. There are some guys going to West End to Wahoo Fish out of Sebastian this weekend.. I'm going trick her treating..

Relax guys. Understand what is being said before you insult someones integrity. You don't know me from Adam and your comments and insinuations aren't appreciated. Testerman, you are right, you are being an ass. Save your preaching for someone who is breaking the law, not me. I haven't done what you insinuate, I do not intend to do what you insinuate.

Let me clarify, I am not going to the Bahamas and wahoo fish without checking in. I said I was not going to check in because I can catch all the wahoo I want in my neck of the woods. Never did I say I would go to the Bahamas, catch wahoo and not check in. Love the internet for stuff like this. Gotta love the know-it-alls.

Thanks for all that helped. Probably best I don't ask anymore questions here.

Default well I stand corrected .. and someone sometimes must be an ass..!

might as well be me!!! .. but every time I am up there and I see boats coming in and hugging the bank it just shows a lack of respect for the bahamas.. bottom line .. excuse me if your not one of them..

Don't really care about what you see every time you are up there. I am not one of them and I don't excuse you. You haven't seen my boat doing what you accuse me of. An apology would have been the right thing but I see you are not up to that.

Direct your wrath at the offenders, not a guy who was asking about f'ing tuna fishing. Again, you don't know me or my ethics and I certainly don't need you to teach me about right and wrong. You see, I am the guy who won't kill a 45 lb swordfish legal or not. I am the guy who doesn't see a gray area where fishing in the Bahamas is concerned, you fish the Bahamas you check in and pay, exactly like I did in March of this year. I fish strict IGFA rules because that is what my club requires and I don't cheat. I don't cheat in tournaments, period. You're not talking to the guy who bends every rule.

No one asked you to be the Bahamian ambassador. Keep your holier than thou attitude and condescending comments for the people who deserve it. I don't. Still not appreciated.

Jags,
Dave and Ted were not trying to bust your chops or be offensive. This issue has been discussed many times on the forum. Check your PM's and I think you'll understand the posts that might have offended you. Harry

[QUOTE=Jagsare1;127343]Coming down to swordfish. Need some local knowledge from those that do this more often.

Jag, Don't expect much help from the local sword guys if you step on thier stones the way you did. These are the guys that coul help you....but I doubt you will get any help from the forum after you threw down with that defensive tantrum. You should know better with 46 post to your credit.

These guys are very protective of the local AND Bahamian fishery. Most of us will travel to the islands 3 or 4 times a year, and we have personal ties and friends in the Bahamas. They weren't judging you....maybe just "nudging" you to do the right thing IF you were going close to the bank.
No harm no foul....relax and try to be a positive contributor and you in turn will become more knowledgable from the pro's on this forum.
Heck, we all get out of line at some time or another...that is half the fun.

Good luck on the sword trip...hope ya catch a slob.

I stepped on their stones? Unbelievable. I asked a question. The peanut gallery reads it totally wrong and accuses me of breaking the law and throws down on me and I was wrong here? I am having a hard time understanding your logic. I have 46 posts here for this reason. This forum is mostly a S. Florida forum, I live and fish in N. Florida so I don't have much to add to the local flavor so I don't clutter this forum for the sake of posts. In other forums, my post count is mid-4000's+ so I am not a newbie.

Clearly, they judged me and accused me of being one of those people you don't like. I fished the area in question once in the last 5+ years. I went over, checked in, did my fishing and came home. I am pretty sure that is legal.

Whiteout continues the stupidity. Continues to accuse me of doing something I haven't done. How am I pressing my luck? By asking a question? I could care less that the "man" watches this because I have nothing to hide. The "man" is welcome on my boat at any time. If you are worried about the man, you are probably doing something wrong.

I appreciated the responses until the unfounded accusations started. Those people that accused me wrongly could act like men and apologize but instead, continue to accuse me. Don't worry, won't ask again. Information helps but isn't worth the BS to get it.

Maybe not but any reasonable person would see this for what it is, an unfounded attack. I have done nothing that should have drawn ire and nothing that the man would ever be interested in.

Default Jags I do hope you go over and have a great time!

so be it running to the buoy or whatever! and I never give up on tunas I like them way too much! (that's like asking me to quit fishing wahoo's 1 minute after the tide change in someones book...!) never wanted you to take it personal 'unless you don't clear' ... . we have caught tuna all year long over there and we used to leave jan. 2nd all the time heading to marsh harbor in route via west end , walkers and re-fuel in green turtle. we caught tuna almost every year.. good luck and have fun. I will tell you flat out we used to run over for "clear bottle becks" before and conchs and not clear... if they still made those I'd still pirate over and back maybe ...(along with everyone else that ever drank one!) going over this week again hope to catch a tuna!

Thanks TT, good luck to you. Because I don't live down your way, it really doesn't make any economic sense to run over, fish, not clear and run back. Not worth bringing the boat down to fish the Bahamas for one day. If I am going to do that, I would simply stay more days and of course, clear and fish. I am still coming down but due to the advice here, just going to swordfish. Hope to catch a nice one that we simply don't see up my way. Thanks again for the info. You guys are lucky to have the option to fish the Bahamas without having to travel.
