Default Puerto Vallarta Report

We went to Puerto Vallarta in search of the huge tuna that have given the city the nickname "Cow Town". We fished a 32 Blackfin with Captain Danny Osuna. Danny and his mate Albeeno are among the best and hardest working fisherman that I have ever had the pleasure of fishing with. We fished 4/0 and 5/0 Avets with braid and flouro topshot with super Mutu hooks.

The first day was one of the most frustrating days that I have ever had. We went to Corbetina, a large rocky outcropping 30 miles from port. There were more birds than you can imagine and bait boiling the water. It was sick! But the fish werent biting. Dannys brothers brother was among the few to catch a tuna, and it went 220 lbs! We live baited with both live skippies and caballitto and then went to chunking and live baiting. We never had a single bite over the entire 12 hrs.

The second day was much better. We went to a more distant seamount called El Banco which was nearly 50 miles out. Again live baiting and chunking skippies. We caught 4 nice Pargo (Cubera Snapper) and three fat yellowfins ranging from 80 to 135 lbs. There was no question that tuna Poke was in our future.

The last day we were planning for continued and hopefully even better success. Again we saw acres of bait and flocks and flocks of birds but the fishing was tough. We caught a 40 lb yellow fin on a floated chunk. Four more big cubera hit the deck. We trolled off to find the porpoise schools that often travel with the big tuna and had two marlin knockdowns but never came tight. Went back to El Banco trying for a late tuna but it wasnt to be.

All in all, a nice week with good weather but challenging and sometimes frustrating fishing.

Outstanding work Richard
That will be the last of the tuna battles until the spring run in April.
Eat all the fresh poke while you can. We will need to break out the frozen tuna loins for the winter season.
Have a safe trip home my friend.

Frozen tuna!!!!

How about we just concentrate on the close relative of the tuna, the elusive and delicious wahoo? Let me know when you can run over and we will put a hurting on them.

Got those cubera snapper on 4/0 s and 5/0 s while chunking for the tuna. They come up off of the sea mounts and pinnacles and are vicious!! I got rocked and cut off several times

Just read this. Great report Rich. That big tuna looks sweet and you got some action.

In a strange way, on overseas trips like this, I have forced myself to lower all my expectations and drink lots of beer. Then, there is no let down. In reality, you are typcially flying in to fish just three days and, just like here, they can be off days for the local standards. However, more importantly, on many of these trips you can always snag some pink snapper.

Cheers!!

Juani

Yes they do and other colors too, but mostly green. However, sometimes good ole Yankee charm and chivalry does the trick. Will still cost ya money any way ya look at it, but always worth the shot when out of the country.

Diane's was 180 lbs. The one in the picture with me was 300 lbs. We caught 2 300 lbers and 2 260 lbers that week. The last day I caught a 260 and then an hour later was hooked up with the 300 lber. Fought them both standing up. First took over an hour, the second over two hours. If you looked up exhausted in the dictionary you would have seen a picture of me. Those things can definitely pull!!!
