Default Canyon Runner Overnight Tuna Report 6/14-6/15 *69 bluefin*

Captains Mark DeBlasio, Justin Nighan and Phil Dulanie took the Pedro Rodriquez charter from Cuba/Manhattan out on the Canyon Runner for another overnighter Tuesday to Wednesday and the crew got into the middle of one of our hottest trolling bites in a long long time. They started trolling around 2pm just north of the 100 square of the Hudson Canyon and had 12 bluefin to the boat by 6pm and then it broke wide open. Between 6pm and 8pm they boated and released another 49 bluefin. The fish are all 25-40 pounds with most in the 30 pound class and their best fishing is between the Hudson and the Dip. It really does not matter what they put out in the trolling pattern as every Canyon Runner Custom Spreader Bar, lure, jet, or green machine is getting attacked. Although the guys did say that they need a new supply of our 6" rainbow spreader bars as the bluefin tore them up. By 9pm they had boated and release 61 bluefin before setting up for the night.

Sharking at night produced three bites with 2 bluesharks and 1 mako. Unfortunately they only got one shark to the boat and it was not the mako as it jumped the hook. Up on the troll in the morning they again got covered up with bluefin and put another 7 quickly in the boat before calling it quits to try to drop on some tilefish. The first bait down to the bottom in 580 feet of water was immediately eaten and they had a big fish on. However, this fish did not fight like a tilefish as it came straight up to the surface. After a 15 minute battle it was boat side. What was is? Another 40 pound bluefin taken off the bottom in 500 feet of water!!! That one was the 69th bluefin of the trip and the guys called it quits.

I think that's awful.

I'm no tree hugger, but a conservative estimate would put 1/3 of those fish as dead after release. Be it stress, fatigue, shark bait, infection, or even injury during the unhooking.
