Wish I was bro, I got to do a "thing" with best my buds family. All the guys have been comin from all over the planet to fish once a year... been goin on a long time. I got invited years ago and didn't bitch when I woke up with a sore ass... so they decided to keep me around... heh. J/J
But seriously it is just an excuse for about 15-20 guys to get together and get drunk and smoke stogies. Seems this years trip will be out of St. Augustine. Bleh. Dunno how much fishin we will get done but we will try at least one day to do sumthin along those lines. But our real trip is happening 6-16 of June @ BMC. Should be cool. Catchem up bro. Yack soon

Wow, lots of people heading over to Bimini Memorial Weekend. I will be there too.
We're heading well north of Isaac to look for tuna and to deep drop . I usually go south to Sylvia (load up on bait and catch stray cobes, usually in the fall) and then run down to Organge or the Riding Rocks. Good luck to all. J |

Good luck to everybody. Beware the grouper and AJ around Great Issac. There is ciguaterra in the water there. I speak from experience. If you are going to eat those fish, get a test kit.

It was in 1999 and it was not good. We took an AJ to smoke and it was delicious yet toxic. I was cycling around Italy 3 weeks later and felt like total crap. You cant eat cheeze nuts chocolate or drink alcohol or coffee. Life was not worth living. I dont recommmend it. And the bad part is that it is cumulative and never completely leaves you- The next time is worse than the first time. Be afraid, be very afraid!!

A friend of mine got it from a Big grouper off cay Sal.Another guy I know got it from a grouper off Chub and I know 2 guys that got it from big hog snappers off Bimini.Another guy got it from a 40lb king caught up around Isaacs. My buddy Steve got a 25lb yellowfin grouper a few weeks ago off the corner. They almost ate it that night for dinner. But they ate the tuna instead.Good choice because big yellowfin grouper are almost 100% positive for Cig poisoning!!I told him not to eat it and he agreed.

Thanks for the warning Richard. You are right about the grouper and AJ's in the area of Isaac.
I do use a cigua test kit, especially on Yellowfin grouper and big blacks. Reds, yellowmouths, scamps, gags, strawberries and Nassaus are usually free of ciguatera. My uncle and fishing mentor came down with Ciguatera in the early 80s from a 42 lb. black grouper he caught off Moselle Bank. He, his wife and two buddies got it bad. It's a neuro-toxin, so it messes you up. Cold and hot sensations in the mouth are reversed, you get extreme abdominal cramps and body aches, major craps, weakness and even paralysis. It can last a long time too. I also understand that once you've had it, you're prone to getting it again. Luckily, my uncle has never caught it again. He does shy away from AJs, big kings, certain grouper and, regretably, hogs. Now, back to fishing. Looking forward to crossing nest weekend and poudning some Kalik Gold. Juan |
