Default AUTEC buoy report

Spent last weekend having my a$$ handed to me at the two AUTEC buoys while fishing a tournament. All weather reports insisted on E 10-15, but more like 20-25 and 6-9ft seas.

Day 1 North buoy the dolphin were there in numbers but no size to them, biggest around 15#, we had them under the boat for an hour trying to cherry pick a big one but after 6 schoolies in the box we gave up on them. The weed was EVERYWHERE so trolling was just a joke, no fun there - reeling in lures covered in salad every 5 mins with the boat rolling and pitching like crazy. We switched to drifting whole squid deep under the sharks and weed and picked up a 23# wahoo at 400ft on fluro leader, that was something at least. Saw a marlin off in the distance chasing something, that was as close as we got to catching it! Also tried deep jigging the iron and foul hooked what we think was a tuna but the second we put any real drag on the hook pulled and that was it. The 'run' home was an excercise in misery at 9kts srtaight into worsening seas, no possible way to get on plane it was so rough.

Day 2 at Fresh Creek buoy, the run out was not so bad and we picked up a couple small dolphin right away but that was it. Trolled big lures for marlin the rest of the morning at the buoy and along the edge to Fresh Creek and by then we were so disgusted we went in and had cracked conch for lunch. Best thing we did all weekend.... Ran back to Nassau at 23 kts which was an improvement on the ride home the day before but not by much, and only because it was a beam sea.

Here's a couple pictures but they don't do justice showing how bad it was. Also a shameless plug for my custom rods!

we were on a 39 Midnight Express, taking waves over the bow while trolling and even one over the side that covered up the rod in the picture and filled the back of the boat

we did get fish though, freezer's full again so not a total loss.

At least you filled the freezer but it's a shame to make such a long trip to be greeted with such uncomfortable conditions. As we all know the unpredictability of the weather is part of fishing. At least you made some lemonade from the lemons that came down on you.

'Are we having fun yet?' was indeed the theme of the tour

I like the big Midnight, good all around Bahamas boat with speed, space, storage ( front cabin ), shade and shallow water capability. If I had one negative observation it would be that you have to be a bit careful not to stuff it, the bow is heavy. Ask me how I know.....

Thanks for sharing a report. I'll be fishing Staniel on the 9th, then on to Fresh Creek--hopefully by that time the seas will flatten out and the YFT will start to make a showing

Looks a little "sporty" Alan. We did get down to the buoy last weekend, got there at 5:00pm, 4 boats fishing it. Did two drifts w/o a bite and headed back to Chub. Fishing was off to say the least in the pocket but we had fun anyway. Check your IM.

What's that handle-looking thing on the rod butt?

that's a hays handle, very simple and effective when it comes to moving a 80W around the boat especially when there is a fish peeling off line. Now that I have one I wonder how I even did it before. Excellent VFM.
