I am on the prowl for YFT too. I am planning to leave for the Bahamas Saturday and come back Monday. I plan on fishing the Tuna Flats between Isaac and the Gummy Bears. However, that forecast is f*cked up. A front in late May?!!! Things are kind of up in the air. Like many, because of the cost of gas, I want to make every trip count and fish hard, but if the weather is going to cramp my plans, I will reconsider. Looks sporty Sunday, 5 to 7 feet.

On a related note, no more of those casual evening swordfish trips for me where you fish between 6 and 10 p.m. If I can't stay out all I night, I aint going. My Contender burns between 35 and 40 gallons on my average sword trip whether I fish for three hours or eight.

Just a little frusrated. I have been looking forward to this weekend a long time. Looked great at the beginning of the week. I have a tournament in Islamorada the next weekend. I hope that one holds. Anyway, still hoping the front stalls or delays.

Juan

I burned 160 and caught a skippie, and yesterday I burned 8 gallons and caught a 35 blackfin right in front of boynton. Go figure.

Default Not much to report from Elbow Cay

Baitwasher:

We fished for the past 5 days out of Elbow Cay (Saturday-Wednesday) on fish Magnet with Richard Bajakian, Harry Klauber, Pumpkin and Soy yo, RT: everyday doing some trolling. We had a steady westerly wind vector everyday and got skunked 4 out of 5 days on the troll. Only yesterday did we manage to briefly hook up with a Blue Marlin and put 5 nice sized dolphin in the box. The only frigate bird in sight saved the day.

We managed to catch a few nice size mutton snappers, yellowtail snappers (some for grouper bait) and strawberry groupers in the 60-80 ft. depth range and caught a fair amount of snapper doing the deep drop fishing in 800-1200 ft. Got a few queens (not too big), mostly silk snapper along with a few Yelloweyes and Button snapper. Add in a Queen trigger and a couple of sharks to the species encountered on our fishing adventure.

We did not see hardly any tuna, and very sparse reports of many fish caught. Our goal was to find some Yellowfin tuna as well but they did not appear for us.

Bajakian is still fishing (Man-o-War to Little Harbour) until Sunday/Monday and may have some more news updates over the next few days.

I have an unconfirmed 3rd hand report of 2 BIG YFT broken off near Nassau recently, both claiming fish well over 100#

but no real confirmation, will post if I get any good evidence

Pulled in 3 nice YF and a BF on our way home from Grand yesterday.
Didn't have enough ice to take any more fish.
Huge school of YF.

Were you North of Mantanilla when you found them?

Tuna

To add to Richard's question, what time of day and what was the hot lure / color of the day? We spent four days off Grand and did not see a single YFT, although the mahi, and bottom bite was consistent enough to keep us busy between boat drinks

Frank

I got the impression he was talking about Grand Cay not Grand Bahama but I could be wrong.

We were running from Grand Cay.
Left Rosies at 7:00 AM and we were about 8.5 miles off the bank north of Mantanilla when we caught the YF.
No particular color or lure.
I believe the way the fish were feeding they would have hit anything that went by. We never even got close to the main school.
Every time we set up we had a fish on within a couple of minutes.

Good job Baitwasher:

Glad to see that you had some good success while some others have tried but did not find them. Of course, I would say that your location was a good one for the quest. Thanks for posting and sharing the photos.

Bloody Hell, Yarrr.

Enjoy the best: "chicken of the sea" .
