I just got a few Speedsters and Runners to try pulling while on the tuna grounds. I was wondering how those that are already using them are rigging them. Do you rig them with wire or mono, knowing that a wahoo or baracuda bite will likely result in a 20 dollar loss if you choose mono? Or do you use single or multistrand wire, protecting your investment against toothy critters but possibly decreasing bites from your targeted species, Tuna. What strength mono or wire are you using, are you crimping mono, are you using flourocarbon leader, and how long are your leaders? How fast do you pull them and with how much drag? Thats about it. Thanks in advance for your help.

R,
Did you find the Speedsters in flying fish color? I shopped two stores already and no luck. F Quote:

I got a purple, red and black and a blue chrome speedster.
Same colors in the Braid Runners too. Got them from Charkbait in California. |

I bought three yesterday... I got the black/purple (really wanted the skipjack one but they were outta stock) I also got the yellow fin and durado colors as they always seem to produce knockdowns. I got them from Anglers supply outta NC, should get them by Mon-Tues. I plan to rig them with a thin multi-strand crimped wire leader (80lb) thats got a red or blk plastic coating. The coating seems to help keep it productive, more so than leaving the wire naked. As for length of leader, I typically run 6'-8' and terminate to a medium (80lb) barrel swivel. I also restring new leader everytime I use the lure... even if it doesn't produce as saltwater can "creep" under the plastic and damage the wire during nonuse periods. Thats my way...
I didn't get the blue/chrome/white as I know we are going to be skipping real flyers both live and dead.

I know all of that chit! Will talk it over with you on the phone. I use a lot of them in bigger sizes in Ca. as well as down here. The tuna like the smaller ones. |

Richard, when trolling for YFT's in the islands, I have always used 80lb floro crimped directly to the speedster. Never had one chafe off yet. The lure gives you alot of protection. I can't imagine using wire over there. They seem much spookier than other places. Also, 100yds is usually the starting point as far as how far out.

100 Yards? Do you just put one way back in the center or do you pull them on the riggers? I just tried them yesterday and they seem too heavy to keep in the rigger pins. I had them shorter and rigged with a short length of 175 lb cable with no knockdowns, but I was trolling off of Boca and it seemed real slow yesterday.

Short is where you want those things Richard. Once you start setting them far back, variables like line drag start making them not work that well.
Atleast for us.

what Dash said. keep the speedsters close and in transom clips out the way of the rigger baits long, YFT in the Bahamas will hit them much closer to the boat than a cedar plug but dont ask me why

Each to his own - we have good results with speedsters in the outriggers and Marauders on the flats. Another good trick is to run one waaay back and then put down on a Downrigger about 150' and slow troll (3 to 4 knots). This works well when you know the fish are there holding on structure but they are holding deep (see on the depthfinder) and only coming to surface occaisionaly to feed.
