Default Tarpon Fishing Tips

Well, finally a forum I can contribute too...I am an avid tarpon fisherman...

For those starting out, start with Circle Hooks and let the fish eat. Jumbo shrimp is the bait of choice, but don't count out live bait as a good bait.

If you have any questions, please post and I'll try to help

Thanks for the tip.. I get them at the dock when cleaning fish and see them inhale the carcuses.. I've even seen one inhale a small swordfish head and take off with it...

We don't try to bait them us as they would cut us off and don't want to hurt them either..

Capt Ted, I have had good luck with sails and swords but have never really got into tarpon. I think I have been cheating myself out fo a good time. Could you be more specific about tackle and tactics?

I am fishing in Fort Morgan Alabama. I am new to Tarpon Fishing. I will be fishing from shore. Any bait or rigging technique suggestions? I can paddle baits out as far as needed, Is this necessary or are they reachable for casting? Thanks guys!!

Default Live Pinfish and Pass Crabs work for me!

Default fish in a barrel!

I took these shots while diving at "the turtle farm" on Grand Cayman...not fishing, but thought they would add some nice visuals to the thread! One of the coolest things I have seen while diving.

It was about 90' of water on the bottom, and we were just cruising along the edge of the reef. As we swam around a corner there must have been at least 100-150 of them stacked up. Probalably in the 50# range. They had a small ball of glass minnows cornered up, but were not eating them...just keeping them corraled.

I aslo managed to get about 15 minutes of video swimming around with them; they were very docile and I could get within a couple of inches of them as long as I stayed relaxed and moved slow.

I'd like to know if you see the tarpon before you throw the jumbo shrimp or pinfish and how you rig it, with weight? or without?

Default Live Pin fish for Tarpon.

Well you can chase the Tarpon if you like but you better have a clue or your wasting your time. Pin fish should be on a 60 lb leader and a number 4 or 5 hook. Six foot of leader and you want a float six to seven foot deep. No weight!
Eleven foot of water right off the beach and you will hook up. Incoming tides they will come off the bridges and start down the beach. When you see them rolling by you and don't get a hit give them four or five minutes then crank up and get way in front of them and set up again. Never Ever DRAG your bait towards there face ,Live, Dead, Lure's any thing or the shows over. Cast the bait right on them and shows over! Cast way in front and leave it or on the side and leave it. They like Natural looking baits and run from bait coming at them . And remember where you see only one there might be fifty. Also you don't have to see them to catch them you must learn what they do on what tides. No Moon forget night fishing the beach. Good Luck

Live herring has been a good bait in the north miami area. It is almost impossible to get big shrimp this time of year.

You can still find resident mullet in the area also and you know tarpon in the intercoastals love them, but unfortunately you may get a lot of barracuda bites too...
