i have only been able to go out twice this summer. have gone to the desoto and no swords, but did get a few mahi at 30 plus at night. any ideas where to try and depths?
i usually put baits down 100-300ft. P.S having a doc. cut open your whrist does not help my fishing. |

We went out sat night to the spur and started our drift into the canyon....but also struck out. I set two un-dyed squid out with green lights, one at 70-80', and another at around 200'...... Any thoughts on what went wrong?

I fish have fished the desoto alot aboard my boat the "TITLEWAVE", and have found that dying the squids red works very well. Next thing is stagger some baits at 125 ft , 200 ft , and 300 ft . We use no sea anchor and drift with the currents . Use a light in the water or two , or your own boat lights if you have them . Last thing is dont just drift all night long on one drift , try re -setting every hour or two and make sure you see some life around the boat . The best nights we have had , there was all kinds of squid and or bait fish in and around the boat . We have caught over a dozen swords in the canyon , with one on every trip since since we have started fishing for them at night on our overnight canyon trips. I also have had better luck shallower rather than deeper , so figure out which way the current will take you and try shollow to deep drifts and or vise versa. Oh , almost forgot to tell you to check your baits often as there are all kinds of fish that will munch on your squid from boxfish to sharks . You dont want to just sit all night on drift with 2 baits , never checking them or you will wake up to hooks.Good luck and keep trying and you will catch one for sure.
