This is an open topic for Swordfishing in the Cayman Islands. But let's kick it off with a tale of a swordfish tail. I was talking with Jerry from Jamaica the other day to inquire about the latest swordfish caught from around Kingston. An initial report sounded to be like a 150 lb.er but that was an exaggerated "fish story": I think after clarification it was much smaller, more like 50 -70 lbs. But it is all stirred up in Kingston right now with Jerry's & friend's success stories. In laughter, he passed along an e-mail to me, that was from an acquaintence of his: and this is the fish tale from Cayman Islands: (Posted with his permission)
Hey Jerry, This is my e mail. I saw that you caught a couple more swords......congratulations!!!! We took out Bob xxx on the full moon but had no bites. Here's a cool story.....Right before the hurricane I was in Cayman asking some friends about swordfishing in Cayman. Their reply was " No swordfish here mon. We tried twice and no bites" apparently they were looking in the wrong place. A 600lb sword swam into the bay beside a boat at the dock. Two fishermen saw it and roped it because it was swimming slowly. They weiged it at the dock. I'll keep you updated with fishing reports. Tight lines, Carey end of tale Hey Carey , thanks from RT. I am posting the photo too. Yeah Mon, I would like to see that happening at Hillsboro Inlet sometime. Hey, any reports of swordfish being in shallow these days? ![]() Picture of sworfish lasooed in the Bay. |

Ya man, I just may set tonight in 20ft of water.
All kidding aside, the last sword caught here, Wednesday night, when the stomach contents were checked, it was found to be one goggle eye and two small snapper. Both these fish are thought to be shallow water fish. Do they venture out in deep water at night or are the swords venturing up onto the shelf at night? Hmmmm |

Jerry:
Ooh, ooh, pick me, pick me: I know the answer! Pick me! (Is there anybody else that would like to reply to this inquiry - OK, the Donkey wins. - Pardon the Fun) Back to reel fishing matters... Well maybe I can answer half of the question, or maybe even less than that. But I think it is still a pretty good answer. Well, as far as reef fish leaving the comforts of Terra Firma Marina, I doubt that very much, (Unless you have seen Finding Nemo - then you could be a BELIEVER), so with your permission, we can dismiss that half of the mystery straight away: Reef fish don''t very much intentionally wander off the drop-off. 2nd half - Is it possible for swordfish to wander into the shallows? Well I suppose there is some reasonable evidence to support that statement. Hmmmm, you can catch swordfish only 2-3 Kms from the beach near Kingston, Wow! So the shelf is more like a rapid sliding plate to the Abyss. Deep water and shallow water are separated by a very small distance (DOG). Whereas swordfish can be quite agile and mobile, it seems very probable that swordfish can wander into shallow water in short order, providing they are still in their (Climate Controlled Comfort Zone / Not). Now if you want to catch a swordfish with high probability, you should set-up where they are ""Generally accepted" as their most preferred locations. But I must say it is very interesting, to hear swordfish reports & tales from the odd-ball locations; or kicked up a level, "The Way of the Infrequent Swordfish". Man, I need to become a book writer. I have so many true stories to tell, and so many more that need to be on queue to experience, then, to tell in writing. Enjoy for now, because this is only a post. Arrghh irat: Who can that be now ?..... RT! you betcha, mon.
