It would be interesting to know how many people are catching them up during the daytime. Who knows, maybe one of these days we could have a friendly competition between Dade and Broward? I'll start.
Boat Name ---- Size --- Date-- Area--- Time of Bite-- Aprox.Depth--- Bait --- Color 1. Max'd Out---- 58" ---- 8/26---- Miami---- 6:00 pm ---- 1,600 ---- Squid Natural

We went out yesterday and tried it out for an hour, the heat was unbearable. We had one bite that seemed to be a shark (Squid was cut right behind the hook).

I stopped the daytime guide thing becauce I'm tired of reeling them back up after a no hit. It's just too much work. Maybe I'll double my prices for the daytime drops, but for now I'm not offering it any more. It does work, but I don't have eletc-reels, and they take most of the fun out of swording. I'll do day drops with buddies that help with the reeling but other than that no more. This time of year it's heart attack weather out there in the daytime.

Damn Capt. Joe....dropping to the bottom in 1,800'. You're obviously going with 80s and bigger, but I am sure there's not much line left.
I tried 1,470' off Key Largo this past weekend with a Tiagra 50 spooled with more than 800 yards of braid and top shot and barely made it even keeping the boat in gear like a deep drop. I am getting an 80 soon just for that purpose. Frankly, I am a stand-up guy and a heavy 80 and bent butt rod aren't my speed but I am totally stoked about daytime dropping. And yes, several guides are going to start offering this including some near and dear to me. Good luck bud. Keep us posted. Juan |

An idea I just ame up with: how about spooling an electric down rigger with a couple thousand feet of spectra. then dropping it down with a 15 lbs weight and slow trolling into the current (you really would not be moving over ground) like you do for kings? No bite, just push the button on the down rigger and reel up the line on the fishing reel manually, but without all the weight. Any comments?
Ahh, I saw the herald article after I posted this. Interesting. Sounds like a lot of work, maybe something I would do once just to say I did it. Then sit back in the bean bag sipping cervecas at night waiting for the bite. Last edited by bullfighter; 09-07-2007 at 05:58 PM.. |

You need at least 1000 yards of spectra. I use 80 lb. test.

At 1800 ft. depth you have to put down at lease 2000-2300 ft.
