Default Swordfishing by private boat

Hi,

I'm from California and know very little about your swordfishing.

From a practical/safety point of view, what's the smallest private boat that can/should venture out to the canyons. Is staying overnight at sea a given? Any center console boats used?

What time of year is a good compromise between the likelihood of calm seas and good swordfishing?
