Default Mackeral Rig

I was at the tackle shop this morning picking up some squid for Friday's assult on the dark side and was talked in to getting some Boston Mackeral to try. It looks like it ought to work just fine, but I'm not sure what the best way to rig it is. Like a trolled Mackeral? Or bridled like a livie? I'd apreciate some advice. Thanks.

You can double hook rig them like a shark bait but it might spin with all the current. When we would set with Macs we would just put the hook through the eyes.

Rig them tail first and drift them facing away from you. They work great.

There are a couple of way to rig the mack daddies and they will be worth there wait in gold in the coming months. Moreso than how you rig the bait, is more important how you prepare the bait to be rigged. Chop off all the pec fins, anal fins, dorsal fins, etc as they will all cause the bait to spin. Sew the gills shut, and the mouth shut, this will also cause your bait to spin. A schiscobob(sp?) stick inserted through the fishes ass the length of the fish will help prevent the bait from spinning as well.

I do all aspects of rigging with the smallest clear zip ties from bridling to keeping the gills shut. It helps to cut the tip of your zip tie on an angle if you choose to do it this way.

After that, its your imagination.......not sure where you shop at, but be careful buying Tinkers from a bait freezer. If they werent prepared properly, they are going to be soft as chit and useless.

Good luck...hope you catch a Slobba on ya SABA

They are supposed to work well. Yes, as mentioned earlier, rig them head down. What I have done with some success is to snip the tail and place the hook through the spine so it come out the other side and then sew the hook shank to the tail. I also sew the mouth, eyes and gills.

Good luck!!

Default Mackerel Rigging

A business assoc. used to work on a northern LL boat and described a method where the hook was placed up under the skin on the head.
pulled thru twice and when pulled tight the hook ended up backwards with the line coming out forward. There was no sewing. This was fast and effective.

BBP you probably know the fine details of this...
