Default Coasties save 4 off Hallandale last night

http://www.d7publicaffairs.com/

Here's the press release about the boat sinking.
Coast Guard Rescues 4 off Hallandale Beach from Capsized Boat
*Video Available*

MIAMI - The Coast Guard rescued four people eight miles east of Hallandale Beach, Fla., after receiving a distress call from one of the four people aboard the sinking vessel at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday.

William Field, Gino Biona, William Curtis and Chad Curtis were able to make a mayday call using a VHF radio to the Coast Guard before their 25-foot vessel capsized shortly thereafter leaving the four people in the water.

The Coast Guard immediately responded and began searching with a rescue boat from Station Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Miami.

The crew of the helicopter located the survivors and directed the 33-foot rescue boat to their location. The survivors were found clinging to each other in the water wearing their life jackets at approximately 6:30 p.m.

"This is a perfect example of how easy it can be for rescue personnel to locate people in distress when they have the proper safety equipment. If it wasn't for these mariners having and using a VHF-marine radio and life jackets as well as staying together in a group, it certainly would have made finding these people more difficult," said Coast Guard Lt. Kent Reinhold, co-pilot of the helicopter that responded.

The uninjured people were taken to the 15th Street Marina in Hallandale Beach by the Station Fort Lauderdale rescue crew.

Glad everyone is safe. Too ften these things have a bad outcome. Sounds like the crew had it together. There's a part of me that misses that CG job.

Lucky guys for sure.

They were boat 13 going by the name of "Lucky Dogs". So much for lucky #13, haven't spoken with my friends for first hand account but found info about them on CG site and recognized their names.

We saw the planes flying above when we were running out around that time. Glad everyone is safe. It was a bit bumpy out there.

Glad to hear everyone is safe and sound. I'm presuming the boat was running out when they capsized (snuff)? Does anyone know what make of boat it was?

This was one of two boats to go under another friend of mine rolled his boat as well. He took two waves over the side of his seacraft and the boat capsized. They were pulled out of the water buy another friend that was close by and happened to see the boat roll as it happened just before dark. Had this happened after dark they would not have been seen.

Glad everyone is O.K.

But why not postpone the tourney to another day? I think it should have been considered.

Makes a strong argument for a waterproof handheld in the ditch bag.

I actually got an EPIRB and a handheld the morning of the tourney. I figured I needed one anyway and why not have it when I am knowingly about to run in 6footers.

I agree with turtle, a thought of changing the tourney date should have been considered.

Glad I had a radar!!! I was able to watch all the storms and try to avoid them as much as possible. The storms kept pushing me far north where I really had no interest in fishing

To all the guys that got stuck inside the huge storm that rolled through. Glad everyone made it home safe.

I agree 100% as well. I wanted to fish the tournament, but when they are calling for 20-30 Sunday Morning.......that chit always creeps up early, the wind never seems to be late.

The weather wasn't perfect but it wasn't that bad. I don't think it was anywhere near 6 feet where we we're fishing. Postponing it would have been an overkill. There are too many boats and crews that are easily capable of handling the forecasted seas. As it was the forecasts were completely off. After midnight the wind and seas subsided instead of building as predicted. However sword fishing is always a dangerous venture. I think too many guys and Kids are approaching it too casually (John Boat Guy!). Sitting out in the stream at night in a 22-23 foot boat loaded with 3-4 guys on it with a 20kt+ gusting wind is not a wise approach. Swordfish tournaments are organized for capable boats and those of us that are in smaller boats should consider ourselves lucky we can participate when Mother Nature shines on us.
