My rollers are squeaking again, I always use that 3-1 oil. Is there a better alternative to keeping your rollers rollin? I was about to buy some chit and thought I would ask first.
So the topic is what roller guide lubrication do you use??? Thanks. Johnny |

Johnny, I use Corrosion Block as well. It is significantly more costly than 3-in-1 oil or WD-40, but I thought I would give it a try. So far I like it. I think I picked it up at Outdoor World in the Hunting dept.
Yeah, I always test my rollers to ensure they roll easily. One thing I have observed: the rollers have a tendency not to spin when specctra line is sliding over them under line tension. The tip does roll but the other guides may have a tendency to stay put unless those rollers are easily free spinning. I would suspect that monofilament has a larger surface friction/ or traction so the rollers rolling and squeaking are more obvious. Still, I think it is very important to keep the bearings rolling. I also use the Corrosion Block for the rest of the equipment too: reels, threads, pliers, etc. You may as well try an aerosol can and see if you prefer it. |

Alrighty Mr. Fins-to-the-left, Fins-to-the-right: Yeah that could still describe you.
I am going to let out a Top secret here, that should not be repeated anywhere. Sshhhh, mumms the word, right? But just in case that you have the Wildwife, that cannot be controlled, no matter what; and if friction was a slight infraction. So in that event, a little bit of that wonderful and delightful Mediterranian substance, some green olive oil should suffice, for your most delightful pleasures. In case of emergency, carry the same aboard or adrift as First aid 101, from a Mariners point of view. You never know when you may need some superior substance, regardless of your situation.! Goes great in salads and on bread too.

PTFE's, "slick 50" in the pump bottle. you cant beat technology. home brew's are ok, however, for lubrication and corrosion protection there's no reason to compromise unless having your rods re-wrapped with new guides is something you enjoy.

Yes, I believe you are correct. I think that I even read somewhere that you are not supposed to lubricate the Teflon, Afflon bearings. But I can tell you than my Aftco rollers have and do get sticky, so I lubricate them so they don't squeak and roll easy. Years ago when I was a poor college student in '83, I hand the entreprenurial itch to become a Slick50 dealer, which was a failed business venture for me. From that experience, I learned that the PTFE contained in Slick50 was actually burnished onto the metal parts from heat of operating machinery and friction between two metals. So I suspect that is the same process that Aftco bearing sleeves are treated for the permanent teflon coating. After that we are just superficially touching those spots with more wet lubricant. But I tell you the salt water environment is unforgiving: so it seems we must stay vigilent on keeping our stuff lubed up. Too bad we can not have all of our stuff in titanium! Our 80 wides would feel like light tackle and if we could hold onto the stuff long enough, it could be passed down to the grandchildren as fully functional quality fishing tackle. But oh no, our manufacturing suppliers will have nothing to do with that, as they would manufacture themselves right out of business. |

I use white Lithium grease, spray lubricants and oil tend to drip/wash away quickly. If the inner bearing race is jammed in there or if there is noticable wear on the inside of the roller then replace the rollers, they are inexpensive and its an easy job.

I use a 50/50 mix of CRC and Marvel Mystery oil. When the CRC evaporates, there is a thin coating of the Mystery oil remaining. I also use that mix to spritz on a protective coating under the cowling of my outboard motor .... it keeps the bolt heads nice and shiny.
