Default wind on leaders or not?

im thinkin bout goin to wind on leaders as apposed to hand lining leader in for swordfish, ive never used wind on leaders on my rods but seen it in action looks like a more efficient method.

whats everyone think?

From a safety standpoint alone, absolutely. Having 20 plus feet of heavy mono on the deck at night is a recipe for disaster. It also makes checking and changing baits shorter work. In addition picking up and moving to a new location becomes a while lot simpler and faster.

Nothing like leadering a big fish. For those who havn't had the chance, I feel really bad for you! Wind-ons eliminate that opportunity. If one were fishing by themselves it may be an option to consider but when done properly the thrill of pulling on a big fish by hand is too much for me to pass up.

Wouldn't fish without them. Leadering is a blast yes, but i've seen many fish lost when the pressure change happens from smooth to strong and the hook pulls.

I fish and love wind-ons. I use about 6ft leaders so once the swivel is at the tip the fish is within Poon or gaff range. Although there is nothing like leadering a Swordy which is my favorite part of Swordfishing.

It makes things extremely easy. Especially if it's just you and someone else on the boat.

300' wind on is the way to go. If ya like leadering fish than grab it a the 300' mark and start pullin.... Just make sure the rod guy is reelin in the slack and backs off the drag a little.

I don't know about 300 ft. of wind-on , but then again turtle has caught some big fish.

You've never seen me lose one. Key to leadering is not change the angle and be firm yet gentle. This will start the great debate again, but wind-ons do occasionally fail. I've never had a crimped leader fail.

Do a search for wind ons on here, there's about a dozen threads where fish have been lost because of them. Then there's the one where Mark (?) saved the day by snagging the wind on as it let go.

I seem to recall a "Dolphin Incident" with you leadering a fish last year, no? From what I remember, it wasn't the fish that was almost lost

Even when using a windon, you still can leader the fish, just have the angler wind up the slack behind you but make sure he doesnt wind you tight. Wind ons are a much easier and safer method than having 30 feet of heavy mono laying around, but like it was mentioned, they do fail some times. To combat that, make your own.

As mentioned above - if you have rods with the correct guides (at the very least the tip and stripper roller) go with the wind ons. Winds ons are the way to go!

Personally guide wise I prefer the Aftcos over Stewarts. Good luck!

It was 42 and he died a horribly painful death. Not to mention, while everyone wanted to get me to a hospital, I put the spread back out and duct taped my fingers back on. It's just how I roll.

BTW, scar is almost gone.

Now what would have happend to a Nick C size finger that is half the size as yours bye bye finger "Should have used a Wind-on"

I also believe wind-on failures are like knot and crimp failures (which does happen as well) From people not checking/changing there gear often.e

Enough finger talk!!!! BTW, a friend of mine lost a good 1/2 of finger this weekend Wahoo fishing. And nope he wasn't using a wind on.
And I will say that I have never seen Mitch lose a fish on the leader. But on the other hand I've never seen one caught either
