Broadbill Recreational Sword Tag Update 2007

Hey just thought I would give you a little heads up on how tagging efforts have been going this year. I know a lot of you out there have our tagging kits, so make sure if you catch an undersize fish (or one you aren't going to keep) stick a tag in it. I know as fishing starts to heat up in the fall you should have a lot of opportunities to release fish. Thanks!

34- Bouy Gear
18- Rod and Reel
10- Longline

If you need tags, please drop me an email Eric.Orbesen@noaa.gov

i commend the fact that there have been more buoy taged fish than rod and reel. These guys are out there hustling there asses off trying to make money and they are taking the time to tag fish

Which type of tags are those numbers for? PSAT, TBF, or NOAA? I find it hard to believe that there are only 18 rod/reel TBF sword tags out there. If so, that means I'm responsible for 38% of 'em this year. That can't be right.

Buck
I believe its NOAA, He will send you the tags and tip for free.
So I have been told, Not positive , TBF shares info with NOAA at the end of the year,

Default Is there any difference in which tags get used?

I've got tags supplied by "The Billfish Foundation". I will just assume that there is some teamwork and collaboration going on in all categories, especially rod and reel, category that is the composite of those numbers posted. And that Eric is receiving the same information.

I am hoping that we can set some type of goal & objective within the Swordfishing club this year, to provide rewards and recognition for those that are ambitiously active in tagging swordfish.

Congratulations Uncle Buck if you are indeed accounting for 38% of the activity. Are you fishing with Broadbill: from my reading the posts on this forum he is doing a fair amount of plastic tagging as well.

I little bit of education, with the means, a few perks and some public recognition on a periodic and timely basis is what we are striving for.

That should get the numbers up a bit: IMO

PSAT tags are nice , and superior with the data that is revealed, but they require so much $$$ to deploy and monitor, until end of life usefulness. We can certainly kick it up a notch within our terrestrial means with the plastic tags!

Is there any difference in which tags get used?

No, I haven't fished with Broadbill. Those number must be just the NMFS plastic tags. I've seen a lot of tag reports online, and know there have been several tagged in tournaments as well. And I think most of those have been TBF.

In any case, I'm glad more folks are getting involved.

I'm pretty sure he posted nmfs tag info only.Otherwise , I've tagged the remaining fish. I'm not sure TBF shares info with anyone any more.BTW have you received any confirms for your tags from TBF?I havent gotten anything back from them.

Yes, this data is only for NMFS tags. TBF does share their data with us. At the end of the year they send us a file of all their previous years tagging results which is then uploaded into our database, so unfortunately I can not tell you the progress of this years tagging effort with TBF tags. TBF does have a larger volume of tags deployed on billfish and swordfish than our program. Thanks again to all who have participated and tagged with either programs tags.

I have fish tagged with TBF tags from Dec. thru now and havent received anything back from them! way more than 6 months. What gives?
Do they send the confirms to the Capt. or the angler or both?

Purple,

I just received tag certificates for the swords my wife caught on our boat in Feb of this year, so it seems like they are runnning 6 months behind. Another issue that could be involved, is if you are not a current member of the TBF they don't send you certificates until you pay for a membership.
Just my 2 cents...

I am not sure how TBF sends out their release certificates. You may want to contact Dave Bogardus (Dave_Bogardus@billfish.org) at TBF and ask them.

Yep I think that was the problem! My membership had expired. I just renewed on-line. I hope they will count all of the fish we tagged for this cycle. I had previously only used the NMFS tags.
