Check out this pic, obviously its not a swordy, but one of our threatened White Marlin.
When you get to the North end of our closed zone, or in the time area closure North of us, the greatest bycatch are these beautiful fish. Remember they are a threatened species at best, and 99%+ are taken by longlines. I'm sure the editor of National Fisherman isn't too happy about the mistake in posting this pic in the September issue, and the misidentification. ![]() "Get the grill ready boy's, we're eating marlin steaks tonight!" |

I thought they just cut the line, or used some type of de-hooking device when they saw there was a marlin on the line and never took them out of the water, Oh wait a minute it was only hauled out for a quick picture and released

All Right enough of your BS!
First of all the picture shows no indication that the fish was not released, second the fish is clearly alive judging by the color and the eye is in a downward position indicating the fish has motor skills, third no hook is present and the fish has not been brought aboard to our knowledge as it is in a position to be released. YOUR threatened White Marlin are TARGETED by recreational fisherman, even though they are being considered on the endangered species list. Marlin tournament Officals and particapants opposed a regulation that would have sacrificed 300-400 White Marlin (according to Dr. John Graves) mortalities by imposing a mandatory circle hook rule. Where is your outcry for that? For someone who have NEVER fished the North End of the closed area you seem to be an expert, when in fact White Marlin are scarce in the proposed area of the EFP. The White Marlin makes it's summer migration to the area from Hatteras NC to the Outer reaches of Georges Bank. Though White Marlin can be caught in the area of Northern Florida, I have yet to hear of a Jacksonville or Charleston White Marlin Open being proposed. Why not make it 99.9%, if your going to try and bullshit everyone then go for it all. The Fisherman in that picture has been handling billfish for nearly 30 years, he is more qualified to release that fish alive in his sleep than you are on your best day. In regard to the Magazine, just goes to show how inaccurate a journalist with little sea time can be (I believe that shoe also fits you). |

Vinnie,
Just because you say BS does not mean its BS, OK? How about you tell us the percentage of white marlin killed by PLL vs rod and reel, and we will go with your number. The North end of the FEC is the South end of the time area closure and certainly IS part of the EFP that we stopped. Yes I said the EFP that we stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next time you have a good night on the 50 line, you might think about thanking those of us that fought this thing to the end it deserved!! Oh of course when you don't have a good night, its probably because Ron Coddington made the US loose their quota, Ha Ha!! And by the way, by definition, that marlin was a take. The fish has been boated and should never have been removed from the water if it wasn't to be killed. And befor you say it, I know recs make th same mistake. And yes it probably was still alive in the pic, but ??you think it made it to the grill?? Just kidding, but I sure will get my money's worth out of this picture. And, another thing, Both Skip and I have voiced our opinion on many occasions about the circle hook deal and you know that I went on the record in DC as opposing any delay in implementing the cirlce hook rule. But this is politics man and you know how that goes. Get ready for the next battle because I'm sure Bluewater will have a new EFP application in the works by the end of the year. The problem is, no EFP makes sense in a juvenile fish area until something is done about soak time and the mortality rate on juvenile sword which is greater than 50% with circle hook if the soak is over two hours! How are the PLL's gonna get around that one, I tell you how, only buoy gear can be fished with the minimal soak time necessary to protect juvenile swords, and then only if they fish it like the best guys out here and with 10 or less buoys. |

I bet Rick Ruiz's phone is ringing off the hook.
I had read on another website, that the Florida Fish & Wildlife says that if you hold up a Tarpon for a photo and they see it, you better have a "Tarpon Stamp" for it. They said the same for Sailfish. They use the word "Harvest" when you hold one up. This same scenario may apply to the photos on this site of undersize Swordfish being held for photos and then posted. The next rumor will be that you have to call it in if held out of the water. It seems like a lot of computer time to chase photos, names and then issue citations, but it may be profitable for them. Nice job Ron. |

If you think that was inflammitory you should read what I wrote to the Editor of National Fisherman Magazine.
Plain and simple, Ron is a Lobbyist. He admits that he will soak as much out of any anti-commercial propaganda as possible. No doubt a very intelligent person, he has very little to no actual experience of what he writes. The closest thing this forum has to the truth about what occurs on a PLL'er is what I write, like it or not. It was never said that PLL do not interact with marlin. Score 1 for Ron and it was given to him by the enemy. Think I will pick up a sport rag and see how many sailfish are smiling for the photos. Last edited by Broadbill-Pro : 08-03-2007 at 09:27 PM. |
