i guess we were just hoping it wasnt a shark i mean the thing was just sounding straight down it never gave us a chance to touch the reel so im guessin it was a 500 lbder after all swordfish are in the shark family! i dont know and dont really care im still pissed we lost it! o well thats why the call it fishing right?

Hey- Wasn't the Navy doing some Submarine exercises out here recently. Stranger things have happened!
I guess thats why we keep going back out. It's the thought that maybe someday something really big is going to give us a pull.

Hey Swordlord51:
Congratulations on having the opportunity to get spooled and lose your rig, not to mention the fish that took your stuff. At least, You had the honor to have a substantial fish on the other end. Forget about the submarine, but do you think you may have latched onto a decent sized Tuna? We are nearing the end of February and I recall many a yellowfin being caught in March, at least on Bahamas East side. Seems like they demonstrate the characteristic of sounding with locomotive force, at least until a shark whacks them in the dorsal. We had a line snap a few weeks back due to angler error, and a fish of indeterminant size: that is irritating. But to get spooled while you are vigorously fighting it and there is still nothing you can do about it: that's exciting! (albeit a little bit pricey) Now comes the time to assess, how you are going to rig up next time. I am curious to know how you were spooled up before the fish de-spooled you. Did you have 1000 yds. of line, mostly consisting of Spectra? Did you happen to know your drag force at full drag and spool? I have never been in this situation before but I would suspect that spectra would slice through the water enough for you to follow along for a little while before you got dumped, certainly for more than a minute, especially if your bottom was 1800 ft. or less. Better luck next time! I sure hope that this happens to me sometime: I would be happy to sacrifice a pricey rig if the fish can try to dump my 50 wide spool. P.S. - I have Penn 50 TWs and I run my drag a littler bit tighter, say 30 lbs. on the scale at full drag setting and full spool. I have a base of 80 lb. Spectra and a 100 yd. top shot of 80 lb. Mono along with 200 lb wind-on. This provides the reserve capacity for some additional drag pressure including some glove covered thumb resistance when needed, while staying within the 50 Wide, rod setup. (An interconnect or the Spectra 80 is likely the weakest link). I like my 50 Wides and it would probably take at least 2 spool dumpings before I may contemplate the idea to move up to 80 Wides. I would first move to the Avet 50 wide Dual drag (100 lb. drag capability - but not the rod) and run all Spectra with just a wind-on. Love those 50 Ws, but you may lose a fish every once in a while. |

Darn it Mike:
You just had to say it again didn't you? Now you are making my wheels start turning again! I had nearly convinced myself out of needing one of those Mondo Avets with dual drags, with up to 100 lbs. of drag stopping power. (And pick up to more earthly 50 wides) Read it and weep: http://www.swordfishingcentral.com/f...ighlight=#3471 All's I can say now is "Sashimi" "Sashimi" "Sashimi" ! |

Big thresher shark?
Risk taker is right. A properly rigging 50W should be able to land most fish with good boat handling. That Avet with 100 lbs of drag should be reserved for chair fishing. I doubt there is an angler out there that can pull 100 lbs of drag standing up for more than a couple minutes. Besides, from what I read on you guys fishing swords, you fish light drags (12 lbs?) so as to not pull the hooks. |

the uss swordfish might be back from the dead. it was an old spy sub from what i was told... He he he he.
i am gussing thresher shark. what kind of time line are we talking about. minutes, seconds? was it a steady pull from the begining? very consistent. could of hooked into a whale shark if it was crusing by with its mouth wide opean. what did your sounder show, any object of size under your boat? fisherman do have the best stories. Alohas! R |
