OK fellow swordfishermen,
Its been 9 months since Bluewater Fishermens Assocaition proposed the "experiment" to exploit our swordfishery off our coast, and attempt to set back the gains we have made in this and other pelagic fisheries. Its also been nearly 6 weeks since the end of the extended comment period on this poorly hidden attempt at assaulting our fishery again. Time for NMFS to announce their decision. If you think Blue water has given up, then you don't understand their resolve. I'm quite sure Rich Ruiaz has been continually lobbying Bill Hogarth to try anything that will let the PLL's back in our water temporarily and permanently. Its time for us to remind NMFS that we are still out here and want them to get the guts to rule against this farce of an experiment. Time to wake them up with our email force. Take the time out to send a quick email to Hogarth reminding him that it would be a great mistake to approve this EFP now or anytime in the future. Lets remind him that we are still here, we are still together, and we won't sit idle while the lobbying machine of Blue Water tries to find an open back door to get this this approved. Send your emails to bill.hogarth@noaa.gov Lets let him know we are still waiting for him to announce the rejection of this proposal by Bluewater. Its important for him to know that our original concern is still there and we won't sit by idle and watch our fishery be destroyed! And, if you forget the reasons why every Blue Water angler should oppose this EFP, check out the last page of the new September issue of National Fisherman magazine. The last page is called "last set" and is always a picture of commercial fisherman at work. This months picture caption describes the captain holding what they call a swordfish "hauled aboard on Dec 16, 2007 by the PLL vessel Tina Marie". The fish he is holding is NOT a swordfish, its a White Marlin!!! Boy is the editor gonna take a bunch of crap on that mistake! I'll post the pic when I can scan it.
