Default Anyone fish the Outer humps off Miami ?

A friend of mine wants to fish the outer humps off Miami about 26-28 miles straight out. Has anyone gone way out there and tried it. Thinking of doing a drift one of these days. Maybe even go further out to the Bahamas side of the Gulfstream straight out from Miami. I know some people do it further north. Who knows, maybe we'll hit the mother load.

I would definitely try that area. There is no reason that it shouldn't be productive.

you better know how to drop on those humps with the way the current RIPS out there...... You might have to set up a 1/4 mile ahead of the hump to get a good drop... very difficult... top of the hump might be around 1300-1600 ft with the bottom being around 2500-2800 ft before you fall off the face of the earth.... GOOD LUCK....

I know someone that goes straight out of Bimini about 20 miles and fishes for swords around those humps. He basically uses the same technique we do here.

We fished at about 24 miles out of Key Biscayne about 3 weeks ago... We did not land any fish, but we went 2 for 4 with to huge blue sharks and one sword that nearly spooled the Penn 50 W we had ... The second sword was not as powerfull as the first.... One thing you have to be ready for is the current.... We set up about a mile and a half from the section we wanted to fish.... Before you knew it we had passed it... The GPS was recording 3.8 to 4 mph current the whole night.... Apart from the current and the 3.5 lps of weight we had to use it was fishing as usual...

Plan to be back out there this friday night weather permitting....

Of the two hits that we did land boat side after the initial run we knew it was a shark.... the typical fast run, stop re-gain strength and finally give up.... However, the first big hit the Swordfish, was awesome display of power... constant run non-stop eastbound run..... He spit the hook and the squid came back without eyes and as if a thin layer of his skin had been removed....

I would have LOVED to have seen the swordfish and if I would have landed him, I would have been ecstatic. I have not caught or been on a boat that has caught a swordfish in over 25 years when my Dad took me on a long liner fishing with a friend of the family. It was like a 250 - 300 pound swordfish was not uncommon.... Now, 25 years later I try it for my own and NADA, ZERO, NOT A ONE... But I will continue to try and/or go broke trying....

Sopla, you have a better chance to catch one around the new moon. Maybe we could form a group down south and go out more regularly. Lot's of times most of us don't go out as much as they want because people have other obligations. Just a thought..

I think its a great idea to form a group for us southerners. I have only gone out once and one reason I haven't gone more is because I don't want to go out alone. I would love to get a few of us to coordinate a few outings.

Either PM me or respond here.

I'm mostly on the Florida Sportsman forum under the screen name Max'd Out. Anyone interested in hooking up, send me an email or IM me. Let's setup our Miami Dade Swordfishing club. My email is: EzLoan2000@aol.com.
Many of us in Miami-Dade are members of a local fishing club called the Cuda Club. The Cuban division of this club have formed the Cubanacan Club de Pesca.
At least once a month after the summer is over, the club typically has meetings at the local Cuban Restaurants or the Miami Outboard Club for dinner. Members bring their families and we all talk about our passion. To get more info. you could go to a thread on the Florida Sportsman Forum: OutdoorsBest Forums: Cubanacan Bimini Bash dates

Max'd Out that is an excellent idea.... I noticed A LOT of people on this post are a north of here.... That is not a bad idea having a group of guys from down south. I trust that I can fish anywhere within reason on my boat. BUT, as they say, there is safety in numbers, it is not a bad idea knowing that there is someone else out there a few minutes away should all hell break loose .... I am sure we have all heard horror stories... Its a great feeling knowing there is someone close by when your 25 miles out....

We run out of Haulover ... most everyone I know is further north ... but the best grounds are near the Hollywood Hills!

Never fished that far north... In fact the farthest north has been out of Key Biscayne.... Should try that one night... Or leave out of Key Biscayne and let the current do its thing....

I typically start my drift at around bear cut. Was thinking of starting just out of Elliot Key since there are nice humps at about that location. This way once we finish our drift, we would be in front of Gov't Cut or closer to it anyways. I want to be closer to my port as possible at the end of my drift. This way we could dedicate more time to fishing, especially when everyone want's to be out there a little while longer. You all know what I'm talking about. Besides, after the Cut, there aren't any significant humps till you hit the hollywood area. I see MA1 is going out of Haulover, were is everyone else going out of?

Max, the first sword i ever caught was right between the triple humps and the Hollywood hills. after that all my effort was from the 25.49 and north. we have been trying the triple humps the last 4 trips. (including 2 tourney's) we have had minimal success. seen fish and other sea life in the lights, been pinned to the gunwale for an hour and pulled the hook, lots of slashed bait's and still no blood on the deck. it does look promising though. i think my next trip will be a long drift from the 25.38 to the 25.55+.

Max'd Out, good idea for a club in our area.
I used to fish the triple humps when I first got started and did well. But that was the only area I had been shown. Through trial & error (and closer to Blk. Pt.) , I now fish south of that (mostly). There is some really good ground SE of Pacific Reef. I have had good success there. I have recently trolled for swords in this area and had many strikes(still working on a better hookset). Not many people fish this area, maybe that is why I have done so well. I have seen bouy fisherman there once in a while. Anybody who goes out of Caesars Creek should give this area a try.

You know Max, that makes sense.... I know its a mission, but we thought of launching from Homestead Marina.... Take the trailer to Key Biscayne Marina and leave it there... drive back to Homestead Marina and drift northward .... Then at the end of the night, when everyone is tired, we just unload at Key Biscayne go.... I will continue the try the eastern part off of Miami in the 18 to 25 mile range and drift a small hump we saw there.... I know.... sooner or later... I will at a MINIMUM see a swordfish....

Any progress on the new Swordfish Club for South Florida....

Thinking of going out Mon, Tue or Wed. Want to take some nice steaks over to Bimini for our annual Bimini Bash on Friday. Have many friends going over for the Tinkin Run. Probably go out of Ceasar's this time.
Most of my friends prefer to go out around the New Moon, but I have that itch again.
Planning to go out to the Stilltsvile sand bar today. Maybe I'll see a Miami based swordfisherman there.
Let's start sending the emails back and forth. This is the best way to get the Club rolling..

Max'd out. We normally fish out of Halover although our home port is Mattson Hamock. We usually fish out of Haulover b/c we normally come home wish fish. When you fish the humps out of Miami there aren't as many fish. We should get togther and exchange notes.
