Both.

Also, remember dead is not only squid, but also fish.

Every Swordfish I have ever cut open has had dead squid. I always use squid, unless I can catch a live bait or two, then I will fish one live bait.

I'm not so sure it matters. Better hook set with dead squid...more action with livies. I hate pulling hooks. So, I favor dead baits.

I concur with Ballyhu: except that it does matter.

I will always use some squid in the line up. But I will go up to half and half, live tinkers, or 2 other live baits at a time.

Or you could do a hybrid mix: razz them up with a live bait. And have a squatter: an artificial squid or a dead squid in tandem.

Butterflied plugs work too. But I have never caught a swordfish with a sausage yet: cheaper with squid.

Broadbill Get thier attention.

Yup. IMO the spreads w/ at least one noisy livey get the most attention. Good luck in da showdown

Are you guys who are putting runners in the spread cutting off their tails to prevent tangles?

I do this but then I think it takes away from their action. My favorite live sword bait thought is a big gog.

Going tonight....so we'll see.

Juan

I agree about the live baits being more attractive, but it's been my experience that 75% of the hook ups with livvies are foul-hooked...but they ARE hooked!
(we once pulled a 395# + slob in sideways..hooked in the pectoral..the gog pieces still dangling)
