Default Swivels:Food for thought

Sun Am 7-8-07 Sunrise, The long bait gets railed, I pushed it to 25 lbs and he dumped more than 1/2 less than 3/4 off an 80, seems like a decent fish, 10 mins later hook pulls, O well thats fishin, then upon inspection of what happened I find this, no tangles, everything in a line. Now this is a 500lb short throw tuna snap that you need pliers to open and close dam near, another wards you need to be tough to open them.

OK what happened ?

I am now almost convinced to do it Teks way and crimp everytime without the use of a snap, I still like the convinece factor of a snap though.

No doubt if it had been the 5 hour 500 lber it would have failed.

Ok lets hear it, dont be scared, I gotta know
Ken

The leader wrapped around the top of the snap. The preasure pulled it down and bent it. When you pulled the hook the slack allowed it to come back off.

It could have happened to anyone, but I would prefer the hook pulling to breaking the snap.

Crimps take an extra minute but but it is worth it.

Sorry you lost the fish.

What TD said.I am fishing the pin rigs for my squids now.The best thing is to change out a bait you do not need to re crimp.Squid rigged in 15 secs. I have been timed even faster then that.

Sorry to hear about losing the fish

I think we here about one of these things happening about once a month.

Screw the swivel. Crimp with an Aussie.

BTW.....while were at it I sent Nick a PM on why he doesn't like the pin rig...curious as to why.
I've rigged baits every way imaginable and I think its got the best hookup ratio.
..........AS LONG AS YOU SEW THE HEAD ON..........

This may make or break the rig. I think if you rig and sew you have the added benefit of the hook helping hold the head on. With the pin rig you don't have this added security. I have a feeling that if Mr. Sword wacks the head off the squid on the first go round....it may cause the fish to lose interest.

Of course, keeping in mind that I may go through upwards of 30+ a night when the squids are bad, the whole sewing the squid to the hook is really not an option for me. I do try to sew the heads on because it only takes like 2 seconds.

You would know Ollie. And I have to agree.

That's why we check the baits every 20 minutes.

Nick does not like the pin rig because he is a complicated individual.

I love the pin rig, has worked great for me (thanks Ollie!) have went 5 for 5 with it on my best night ever. I crimp the rigs and pin rig, works for me. Thats why they have multiple flavors of ice cream. I don't think the end result is much different then they way some people rig. Unless you take the time and sew it up real good like Drew does. Even with the pin rig ripping the squid off can sometimes be hard.

I think they key to the pin rig is nice thick bodied squid. I won't pin rig with thin squid that don't hold together well. Tonight we had a bait out from 830 to 130 that never got hit, the head which wasnt sewed was still nice and high and tight.

Ollie, call me sometime, i still wanna get a forearm workout if you have a spot.

I've been using zip ties instead of sewing the squids. Takes much less time and has been very effective. Just my .02
