Got an early start, met a very nice young man on this Forum that has never caught a swordfish before. They had been out on 3 trips before without even a bite. I went along to show them the ropes and figured that Fri. would be a fantanstic Gladiator night. And it was.
We got set up at about 6:00 right on the hills there was a south west wind blowing and figured the bite wouldn't turn on until later. Boy was I wrong, first hit was in 10min he hit a runner at 200 feet, rebaited and set another 20 min when a squid got slammed at 300 feet. The fish had a good hookup and after I got the lines clear for John half the spool was gone at 9lbs of drag. We let him run a little more and after 30min it was a back and forth battle. After an hour into the fight I got a look at him and he was definately a keeper. I touched the leader and put some pressure on the the fish and he headed straight for the deep. John was a little tired at this point and did a fantastic job bringing this fish back to the surface for one more look. I got a good shot with the flying gaff and in the boat. Fish weight was 80-90lbs and a little pink. Ok one in the box before 9:00, everyone on board including myself was very happy to see John catch his first sword, I remember mine there is nothing like it as you all know. We set up again in about 1450feet of water trying to target a bigger fish. After a short 45 min wait we got our wish. The drag screamed off the reel Johns father grabbed the rod and rolled the drag up to 16 lbs. The fish was grey hounding and screaming line. He was on about two min when we pulled the hook. I would have liked to taken a look at that one, I am sure it would have been a nice one. Hope you all had a great night we sure did, I forgot my digital cam so the pics will get developed in the next couple of days then I will post Tight Lines Tague |

Fished with Doug on the Double D Friday night. Went 1/1 with the bite coming at 7:45 (right at moonrise) on a 100' squid. Fish literally swam to the boat and was boated in under 5 min. So much for the fight! Fish was 60" LJF and full of dozens of deepwater fish about 8" long. No squid. Fished till 10 and called it an early night.

Sorry for the late post. I was out last Friday and had a great night although we lost many baits!
All our runners resulted in no hookups. They were all ripped off the hook, but couldn't get a good set on them. IT may have been the smaller fish. We tried the deep jigging method to much success! Had a sword follow the bait up to the boat twice and I believe to our other baits, but they were pups. We released 2 pups in the 30lb range that were hooked perfecetly in the corner of the mouth. And then we had a nice hit on the deep jig rod at an estimated 500ft. We fought it for 2 hours with 3 people. 2 of my friends were down from up north and all they do is fly fish. So this was crazy to see 100lb test spin off an 80 at lightning speeds. Well we got the fish to the boat, grabbed the leader and the hook pulled. Looked to be a 120lb fish or so that was just relentless at 11lbs of drag. WE were realeasing all fish anyways, cause we still have fish in the fridge from last week. I was asked to go sailfishing the next day.... |

well glad to see that everyone is catching up them swords. i was out on friday night and as soon as we set up just before dark about 5:15 or so we had our first hit a squid 600' down dyed purple. it ended up being a small fish 51" so we realesed it after a 30 minute fight or so.
set back up deep in about 1600 feet nothing. we drifted from the 00 to the 07 then set up again. at about 11:30 we got our boy it was on a live tinker about 190' down. fish hit like a bat out of hell and ran my 50w with spectra alomst completely empty before we got her turned. after 2 hours we got our fisrt sight at her she was a nice fish. since it was myself and the old man we had a hard time clearing all 7 lines and getting ready to shoot the fish. after 2.5 hours we increased the drag to about 17lbs and she started cooperating. another 20 minutes and she was up. i took the shot and then stuck her with the flyer. she weighed just under 200 at the marina. not a bad night. hopefully we will get a break again on thursday and do it again, tight lines and keep up the fishin. |

I went out the other night, the weather was great all the signs pointed to one heck of a sword fishing night. Unfortunately we had some Land-Lovers on board and they got sick and wanted to go in, so it turned into an early night. We did get some 2 run offs, but the hooks pulled. I would love to get out again soon.
Tim I see your posting, very impressive. What is the name of your boat? I'll give you a shout the next time I'm going out. I know that you posted in find a mate. I'm still available, just let me know when. John I'm glad you finally got your fish. What a great feeling and you know what? You'll feel the same way when you catch you 30th fish. Wish I could have made the trip with you, but my computer was down and I got the e-mail to late and made plans to go to the Saltwater Sportsman Seminar up at PGA. Tight Lines, SwordSlasher |

I have a couple of people to thank for my first battle with the gladiator. First is the wbesite. I found the site immediately after swording one night unsuccessfully. I learned some techniques but most importantly I found people who like myself have a passion for offsore fishing. Tague, who I met through the website, led us to our first swordfish. Thanks a lot. It is something that I will never forget. I had a passion for swording before I even hooked up with one, and the battle the other night only burned that passion deeper. Its a great site with great people. I am going out with another person that I met through the site tommorow night. I'll let you know how we do. Thanks again.
