Hey Mike:
That was a great article. I read it today during lunch break. It provides another vantage point perhaps with some perspective outside of the commonly travelled posts from the SFC forum. It is amazing how closely his appraoach aligns with some of the methods from the members posting to this forum, yet it seems like he may have learned and developed from scratch, or proven it out himself. My methods are very similar to his as stated in the article yet somewhat different too. It is also intersting to note how he has adjusted his style after going after swordfish for two years. I have petty much delevoped my own personal technique without a highly seasoned Mentor in the boat (such as Capt. Ken, Chummin w/Chunk and Swordslasher, etc.) not to mention some other highly experienced swordfishermen, to learn hands-on from the experts. (Who knew what first, and taught to who next, is also another entertaining aspect of the swordfishman's niche and also "The way of the peaceful sword-Warrior, lol"). I started from nothing (except for one Penn 50TW) and am "the Apprentice" on the block, so I have no claims to fame on this particular topic. But nearly one yearly later after listening, reading and fishing: they're coming in the boat now. But none have helped themselves over the gunnel yet! Although I do have to give a lot of credit to reading bits and pieces of the many posts on this SFC forum, from the skilled and "enlightened" ones, and disseminating the advice into practical application. I have also learned some things by attending seminars presented by Ray Rosher, Bouncer Smith and Dean Panos: there you get a chance to actually see some of the suggested concepts; although, not adrift actually doing, but more visual than a forum post. Lastly, participating and networking in the Southeast Swordfishing Club brings you in close proximity with experts, novices, recreational and commercial swordfishermen alike. Besides talking with fishermen interested in catching swordfish, some of their experiences are very interesting, and their experiences keep you wanting to get out fishing one more time, and sooner than practically possible. Somehow your friends seem to like you just a little bit more, now that you have steady supply a frozen swordfish in the freezer, which of course you graciously share with them, and they seem to appreciate you just a little more too, knowing that you now have the charisma to invite these wonderful fish for dinner; and they respond favorably to your invitation. P.S. - Mike this article from CApt. Jim S. would be some great reading placed in the Rigging department. WARNING: Swordfishing can be addictive. It may aggrevate compulsive function. You are hooked on them if they are hooked to you: a symptom of Bi-Directional order. Apparently there is no cure except for obstinance. |
