Default That is too cool: what tackle item will be invented next?

Thanks Johnny,

For that very helpful reply. I just wonder why those rod rings are not already all over the market? It just makes to much sense to me.

I will probably do just as you suggest and get a crowder rod with the rod ring feature, one piece style, Probably on a slightly more durable blank, than my existing Crowder rods 15-30 lb. class.

The spinner that I had (past tense- as it is now resting on the bottom of the El Rio Grande due to angler error, at least I am not presently on the bottom ), was a Shimano Spheros. What was interesting about that reel was that you could run the drag up over 20 lbs. on a full spool (24# is the rating but you have to really bear down on the twist cap to achieve that.) Consequently, I had 60# JBHC spooled on that reel for a potential big fish encounter. That reel is also not so expensive ($140) that you would cringe at the possibility of latching it onto another outfit (say your 80/130), should you not want to get totally spooled and popped off.

Crowder (Matt, etc.) did my last swordfish rod, small #2 Stor-a-butt along with a swivel tip on a 60-130 Blank. It took 2 months to get it, but that is my favorite swordfish/anyfish setup right now. I cannot say how much I really like the swivel tip. Not that you need all of your conventional rods configured that way, but I would say that two is a good number. That is also my preferred rod for the outriggers because the tip points perfectly that way and is still pointing toward the fish when the line pops out. The same goes for placing it in an awkward rod-holder positon for drift fishing. Line feed is in the right direction. I have witnessed the loss of one swordfish due to power-pro jumping the roller and flossing itself between the housing, due to improper rod handling.

Now you've done it. You've got me hankering for a new rod: SIC guides, aftco, reel mount and a rod ring. (Sssh, I won't tell the wifey that you are corrupting me. ) And it looks like I could possibly even retro-fit another with the two-piece rod ring style that is shown at the site you provided.

Good posting. It sure beats the posts out of those windy weather soap-opera scandal posts.

BTW - Nice GOM fish pics. I remember reading Litigator's post(s) last year when he did his Venice trip.

Default Haven't had any luck yet

Catching:

I have trolled the the Hi-Speed Ballyhood lures (2 lb,. Banshee lures) out to the sword grounds on multiple occasions, and no such luck as of yet. Nothing to report, not even a strike.

That idea seems to be a good fit for slower moving vessels that may be in the desireable speed zone anyway, but for the center consoles that cruise a bit more comfortbly above 18 knots, it no longer inspires me to do so. But it is in the bag of tricks when situation meets opportunity.

Oh no. A double post. I better get some lunch and give someone else a chance to get a word in.

Marlin definitely can be found deep where swordfish roam. I recall a story out of Bimini several years ago where some dude was deep-dropping off Gun Cay got nailed on the way down. Some how, some way, it turns out a Marlin slammed into the weight and broke its bill off leaving it impaled in the sash weight. The guy took it somewhere and it was identified as a marlin bill.

Nice catch. I've heard some chatter on some blues being caught too of late.

High tides!

Great job on the marlin & sword. We just saw a marlin the other day while dolphin fishing. We thought it was floating debris until it raised its dorsal fin and took off. I guess we scared it with the boat therefore had no chance of catching it.

I was just about to say that. Notice the squared Anal fin, but pec fins like a whitey. Cant really tell without looking at the scales from what I gather, but it may be the "new" species the Roundscale spearfish
.
Either way good fish
