Swordsalsher,
Thanks for the report. NOAA was saying the gulfstream has pushed pretty far offshore at Port Everglades. I guess your drift speed confirms it. going out tonight. Hopefully we can find something to play with.

Ne winds always slow you down pushing against the stream. Gulf stream is running 10-12 off the coast. The 50 line is about 14 straight off.

Carey,
Very true about those northerly winds slowing the Gulfstream somewhat. What I was refering to was the NOAA satalite estimates putting the West wall of the Gulf Stream at 17.8 Nautical miles east of Port Everglades on January 31st. As always I am very hesitent to believe their estimates. I was interested in some actual reports. I found that information on the Bouy data site.

Hey Scott:
Glad to see you getting out this week. So much for planning for a calm night; however, you seized the opportunity. At least, you got to try for that monster. Quick question though, with the talk of slow drifts (due to Nor-easters) and western wall of Gulfstream.... Does anyone use this as a guide for influencing where, in terms of longitude they may initially try a drift? It seems like the wall can meander by many miles; thought I saw a report a few days ago where it was only 2.0 miles off PE and many more offshore further south. It doesn't seem to make sense to adjust your drift mile for mile but there could be some subtle differences toward your fishing spots. It seems like the swordfish can be all over the deeper water with the highest propensity between 900 and 1500 FSW. Is anybody tracking this variable as a part of their swordfishing log, to help influence where their prime drift spots are to be for a night out on the darkside? |

I see what you are saying RT. The question becomes how much current affects the location of the fish. Keep in mind, this is not sailfishing. With that said, if the western wall of the stream was 16 miles straight off of PE, I'd be fishing that far off instead of 14. I think it is important to find current (keep in mind a strong wind out of the north will greatly reduce drift speed).

We should have been 3 for 3 but Scott likes to leave the drag too loose, while the first fish is screaming line with it in neutral,by the time He hobbles up to the right rod and decides to put it in gear its too late,Then I decide to teach him a Chumley {Joey} move, and sure enough the Chumley move works like a charm, fish on,and low and behold Scott somehow has his armpit over the tip of my rod w/the fish tight,I cant manover and needless to say say He gets away,Chumley would have thrown him overboard at this point for screwing up one of his best tricks,I dont say anything and rig another squid, still frozen hard as a rock,I hurry and throw it right back, squid like a rock,I go right back to the Chumley move,Same as before ,Bang he enhales my frozen squid instantly and We are tight,This Time I instruct Davie to keep scott up in the front out of the way so We dont get skunked.
Chumly,Im sorry I taught Scott one of your best tricks,I made Him promise he wouldn't bast it all over the internet.

I know there are people out there who pay very close attention to the speed of their drift. It will be intersting to see if anyone is willing to divulge any info.
I am by far to much of a novice to have formed much of a useful opinion, but my log has shown some trends. Need to get more trips under my belt to improve the info.

The Nort, northeast winds will slow your drift not the stream. Even though your drift speed could be 1.5 knots the stream is moving past you, thats why the jugs will be ahead of your boat. On those nights the scope on your lines will be almost straight down so you can adjust your leads lighter.
I have been out there on other nights where there was no wind and slow current under 1 knot and still caught fish. You have to make your adjustments and not stick with the norm.

No Regulation team, you can chime in here if you want, but if I recall correctly, you guys hooked your biggest fish on a slow troll. 300 plus lbs. Sometimes slow trolling to keep your bow into the waves is much more comfortable (especially on a sloppy night). As long as you have baits out there (at the right depths and locations of course), you will catch fish.

Thanks guys for the great info on your setups. I know I have not been doing enough to vary my set up with the changing conditions. Something I need to work on especially in the weight deparment.
Swordslasher- I think the slow trolling method has a lot of merrit. When the right time comes around I think we will have to try it. It does detract from the nice quiet night of drifting, but who cares if it means a chance at a fish.

Man:
This stuff is better than watching the soap operas on a, Sick day stuck in bed: man: you guys are hilarious. Better than a cat fight.... I can't wait to go fishing with either of you: if not for the fish but the entertainment factor. But I'm warning you: I only know two jokes, at least that I can remember now, and one riddle. But I think it is simply more fun to fish, tick- tock tick-tock. (But don't pick on me while on my Pirate ship: I can learn you the definition of keel hauling. BOATJUMPER ! - Now This I understand, like at a Columbus Day Regatta on Saturday night, but how do you do this while adrift. Or, are you talking loyalty? Hey, if you don't jump boats once in a while, the New world would have never been discovered.... I think Cristobal noted that in his journal somewhere. Catch a keeper next time maitees..... you' ll have nothing to wine about then. except for .... yadaa yadaa yadaa. RT irat:
