Default Anyone try Swording around the upper Keys?

I'm going over to Key Largo this up coming weekend and was wondering if it would be productive for swordfish fishing. I looked at the swording charts and could not find many good humps out there in about 1200 ft. of water.

Hi there. I spend most of my time deep jigging and live baiting between the Whistle Buoy, Carysfort Light and the Elbow. Love the area for muttons, grouper, Rican Pompano, wahoo and kings.

Only recently have I started swordfishing near these spots because logic dictates there is not as much pressure down there. Like you, I don't know precise sword areas but I have ventured out in the late afternoon for a couple sword sets south of the Poveromo Canyon....about 16 miles southeast of Carysfort Light in 1500'. I have not had the best of luck but have released some pups about 42'. However, they got to be out there. There's also a place called Todd's Hill I believe southeast of Molasses which is on the Top Spots fishing and diving chart for the Upper Keys. If they are slaying them off Islamorada off Alligator and the Humps, they got be off Key Largo too.

Good luck. After the tournament in a couple weeks, I will give Northern Key Largo another shot for swords. Keep us posted on your efforts too.

Juan

I was also looking at the Humps butthey seem to be too shallow for swording. I wouldn't mind going over to the Humps if they are so productive.

There are humps and rises in deeper water off Key Large, Islamorada and Marathon that are beyond the shallower humps that hold AJs and tuna in 400 to 700 feet.

If you look at a good bathrymetric chart you may be able to ID some good spots in 900 to 1,700'.

In the 1980's, I knew a guy who fished out of Garden Cove Marina in Key Largo and he would run straight south off Molasses to 1,600 feet and drift well into the night to north of Pacific/Triumph and then run back to Garden Cove, and would pretty regularly catch nice swords. So, they have to be there.

Good luc k!!

Swords are not only found in deep water ...I`ve tried off miami ... as an experiment and had slashed baits in 700ft of water ... the therapy got one at 9:00am in 30ft of water ..trolling a small feather for mackerel ...... remember .. they are looking to eat so ... I would bet they are near any reefs or humps ... just have to deal with more sharks >>

I guess I'm going to have to give it a try. I'll be down in the keys for about a month and a half. Plenty of time to experiment. I'll let you know how I did fishing the shallower humps.

I recently had a bite trolling for swords just south of Pacific in 1800' of water.
Also saw some buoy guys set up out there. They are out there..

There are some good places to fish here. One is south of the Marathon humps. The other is the floyds area. I know some people who fish off key largo who do very well there, but I cant tell you where as I dont know where they are setting up..Hope this helps.. AuSUM

I should have loads of info. in about a month. I'm going to basically give everything a try. The shallower humps, Floyds Wall North, Drifting from Key Largo to Triumph at different depths, etc..

I have my boat in north Key Largo & have been trying to find a good chart that shows good bathymetry. The sword chart for the keys only shows the Humps as areas of interest. None of the other places like "Rosher's, Foyds etc appear. does anybody know of a good chart for the area? And where do they sell it?

Unfortunately I've been super busy. I did get out swording once with Tunaman outside of Whistle Bouy in 1200 ft but it was rough as hell & got no bites. By the time we checked our baits they were almost flatlining on the surface with 2 lbs of lead. That was about 2 months ago & have only been out once since then & it was that Sunday night that all those nasty storms came through South Florida with all the lightning & hale. A nasty squall caught me offshore & had to run into Ocean Reef to wait it out in the bathroom. Disco actually guided me to O.R. via the phone while he watched the radar on the internet & weather channel telling me where the break in the weather was. I drink coffee with Disco just about everyday. We actually have 3 cases of chum & a few dozen fresh baits bought & paid for to go mutton snapper fishing for 2 weeks now & have not had a break yet. Maybe next week.

I was hoping to fish this weekend but all I did was take out the boat to the bay with the family & catch a buzz & some rays.

We should definitely get together this summer.
