Guys,
I am just getting into the game. Please respond here or PM me with your favorite swordfish terminal tackle rig from the snap swivel oo the main line all the way down to the wieght... Any help is appreciated. If anyone lives up in NW Florida of the AL coast and wants to go, let me know. I have a 33' Palmetto that I am dying to get out there!! Cameron

I do not like nor do I use windons.
I use 15-25ft of 300lb mono for leader right to a barrel swivel. 10/0 offset j hook. My weight lays about 40 feet from the swivel on rigging floss using telphone wire for quick breakway. I usually put the light at the swivel. Once the fish comes to the boat i handline the leader. Note - Put a bead above the swivel ifyou have newbies on board so they dont wind up the swivel into your pretty guides. |

Topic has been beat to death.
"Search" and ye shall find many many rigs. ![]() P.S. Search for the keyword "pool noodle" and you will find a great float.

I like, use, and highly recommend wind-ons.

I prefer hanging the weight from the light, which connects to the mainline with a longline clip. Which leaves only 1 thing to worry about/remove from the line. A break-away weight connection can be used too.

I do mine like Uncle Buck. I attach mine to the main line, about a foot above the wind-on. That puts them about 35 feet from my bait.

Our fish up here in the gulf prefer the weight to be a bit closer to the bait. I usually run about a 12' leader and put the electralume type light near the swivel with the weights off the bottom of the light. Have had great success with this rig in the gulf. Don't forget that mullet make a great sword bait as well. Beats spending $3-$5 a piece for large squid...and they are much easier to rig.

Uncle Buck..or anyone,
I run 100lb spectra as my main line, and top shot with a 300lb wind on leader. I have problems getting the longline clips to "bite" on to the smaller diameter spectra line...any suggestions ? Is there a smaller long line clip that I should look for ? I have tried adding some plastic tubing to the bend of the clip, but that just makes the clip bind and hard to operate. I like the long line clip idea to offer a quick release for the weight and light. My last resort will be to add a 50' length of 200# mono between the leader and spectra. The clip should bite on that. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Try a few half hitches around the spectra with a rubber band. Then clip the long line clip onto the rubber band. The half hitches should be enough to keep the clip from sliding, and the band can wind right onto your reel so you still have a quick release rig. Cheers-Mike

Dont use half hitches
They will stay on that line forever.Just twist band around line 5 or 6 times then pull one end through the other. When band breaks it will come compleatly off line. Then just clip on to the band or clip on the line infront of band and put loop of band in the clip as well. That way if you have to keep reeling bad when the clip hits the tip the band will break and let the line slip through the clip so you can keep reeling to stay tight.
