Default Radar truth or false

Guys,

Do you know if it's true that if you have radar, the following applies?

1) You must keep it on and watching it at all times
2) If somebody hits you and they don't have radar but you do, it's your fault and not theirs...even though they hit you
3) You will get more visits from law enforcement - especially at night

Is there anything else? Personally, I never paid attention to any of this in the past.

Thanx alot.

1. If you have it you will have it on and be watching it anyway

2.If somebody does hit you I would just be happy to be alive.

3.If you see a boat on radar sneaking up on you at night and they donot answer your hail on 16 I would start um up and run away.

Hope this helps

QQ,

Thanx alot. In regard to 2) I see the point, but if it's a slow speed hit, I don't know who would be at fault. Thanx again.

Sorry Pipe those were smart azz answers but I could not resist. In florida I would not worry about a slow speed hit like in the fog up north.I really don't think radar makes you a law enforcement target. If you have it you really will be looking at it even on nice days because you will be looking for birds with it.Go with a 6kw unit if you want to see the birds well.

QQ, Understood regarding the answers. Yea, the primary purpose would be for birds. The 6kw would be my choice right now....still pondering though. Sometimes this law sxxx gets tricky. Like in an inlet with nasty weather, getting bumped, damage caused, and it's my fault because I had radar and the other boat did not. May sound silly, but some of these laws are worth a sxxx.

Yea, to me it makes no sense. Can this be true per the law?

The law says that all vessels use all means available to avoid a collision regardless of right of way. Radar is just another means. I was drifting on the 48 line one night and picked up a sailboat on the radar, returning from the Bahamas. Watch him for about 6 miles heading right towards us. When he got within a mile of us, I tried to radio him but got no answer. Threw the spotlight on him a couple of times and still no reply. Finally powered up and moved off our spot without picking up lines and within a few minutes he had run right over where we were fishing. He was apparently asleep at the wheel and no lookout. It would have been useless to argue fault 20 miles offshore with a 40' sailboat sticking through my hull.

Popi has it right and it is an actual law in the Coast Guard CFR's.

The Inland and International Rules require the use of radar in fair or foul weather, day or night, on vessels so equipped.

When the Coast Guard does accident investigations that involve vessel collisions they assign a percentage of blame to all the parties involved.......No matter how one sided they seem.

As far as the Law Enforcement target I have heard up here when Otherside Tuna starts to kick in they pull over and check allvessels with big enough RADARS to spot birds.

False*, false*, and false*

* 1) If you are involved in a maritime incident and are radar equipped but not using it, the first question out of the investigator's mouth will be why weren't you using all your navigational equipment

* 2) you being radar equipped doesn't change any of the rules to navigation concerning overtaking and give way vessels

* 3) you shouldn't get anymore visits from law enforcement than any one else. You're probably more likely to get checked at night simply because more illegal activities occur under the cover of darkness.
