Like Jup said... Definately whenever there is damage. Cuts, nicks, abrasions. But for general maintenance, every 3-4 months depending on how much you're using 'em. (I've been swording for just over a year now, and I'm on my 4th set of wind-ons.) Prior to a big tournament is a good time to change too. Also consider cutting off a few feet or more of your mainline, and tie a new bimini twist or splice a new loop.

i think you should look real close at the serve where the H/C is finished to the mono. i've seen them start to fail where the mono leaves the finish wrap from the H/C.

We have a good chafe on one where the guest onboard couldn't understand how to keep the line level.
