Default Best gear - what would you get?

If money was no object, what rod and reel setup would you purchase for swordfishing....? Right now, I am using Penn 50's with matching rods that I am sick of.

130W Alutecnos on Calstar blanks I would make myself. I would have six of them and I would use 50W Alutecnos as my bait rods.

Guys, thanx. The other question would be 80 versus 130? Would it be smart to go with the 130 without any regrets? Thanx again.

forget the 130s. An 80 holds plenty of line

My ultimate setup, a seeker blank, winthrop tool guides, a PENN 80VSX!!!
spooled with 130 hollow JB, and a short topshot.

oh, and dont forget the 61' Hatteras

Thanx again! Yea, this would be stand-up. Also, I was thinking about 5 1/2
foot rods.

That's the right size rod. Don't go larger than an 80W for stand-up fighting.
I love my 2 speed Penn Int.s. but the Shamino's are OK also.
PM me if you want a custom guy to build your rods. Best I've seen and under $300 ea. Can't beat that any where. All Aftco hardware. I've used and abused mine for about 3 years of swording and they are holding up perfect. I'm going to have him build 6 more for my 50SW next month.

For Standup, no reason for 130's!!. For me quality and value, Tiagra 80w with 130# JB would be huge line capacity of well over 1,000 yards. Maybe a 150 foot 80-100# Momoi topshot on a quality 5' 6" rod such as Chaos. You can spend more on reel and rod, but others wouldn't do more. This and a good crew and your set!!! DUKE

50WLRSA Tiagra or 80WA. Short bent butt rods with Winthrop Tool guides. 5.5 feet. winthrops are definitely worth the money.

if you get tiagras, definitely get the A model (new version) the handle and ratcheting lever drag are great.

I use Tiagra 80wa spooled with 200 pound power pro, on a star rods interchangeable butt with aftco roller guides (I use bent-butts most of the time, but the option of changing to straight without buying another rod is great). I love that setup and that is why I use it.

I have fished with Shimano, Penn, Alutecnos, Okuma, and Avet. The Alutecnos are the best I have fished with, but for the money, I still think Simano Tiagras are the way to go.

However, on Friday night I will be fishing with Accurate for the first time, testing some of their new stuff. I have heard great things about these reels. I will let you know how they are on Saturday.
