Marlin Catch 22: Big fish Jan 30

Lost a good one early on Tues night, pulled the hook after 10 mins. Then at about 10 pm the short balloon sang, and never stopped. 3/4 spooled a 50W in about 3-4 mins, never slowed down. I palmed it to stop her at about 1/3 spool left, finally put my full hand on it, slowed her (maybe a little), then POP. Reeled it all back in (400-500 yds), and found the top of the snap swivel cut thru the 250 lb wind-on inside the crimp. Got it all back but the swivel, 6 ft of leader, and the hook (and the donkey). Whatever it was....

I see your boat go by all the time.
Sorry to hear about the fish.
I hate when things like that happen. Goes something like this: when the fish keeps running, when you have to apply more pressure, when it breaks, when you think about it...don't forget to wash it down, though.

Sorry to hear that. Better luck next time. How much drag were you using? Straight mono or braid combo?

no chafing gear, never thought I'd need it....Also it was straight 50, 15-18 lbs drag. In retrospect, I could have done more. I locked it with 1/4 - 1/3 spool still left (I could have waited another minute). Also we realized I could have hooked my two 80s up to the rings on the 50W, then tossed it in, put both the 80s up to 20-22 lbs drag, and waited, let her wear down. It all happened so fast, we were just trying to clear lines...

That's just the way it goes sometimes. Hind sight is 20/20. Still fun as heck though.
