Default A costly Tuesday night drift

WOW... it was National Lampoons - Swordfish Adventure.

I went 1 for 6 while boating a fat 52" fish. We baited one in the lights but he pulled off. We broke off a nice one and 3 more fleeting hook ups.

I lost 2 terminal rigs w/lights, the angler broke a rod during the Sword fight but we landed that fish, my Hyrdaglow light bulb shattered somehow. It pretty much ended up being a break even charter. The only good thing was the seas were flat as glass down here until we left at 1 AM.

How did you do BB-Pro?

This one bit at 7:00, took an hour to land it. Angler drove up from Bass Pro Shops in the Keys (Penn Rep), so rather than get strapped into another he decided there was enough meat on the deck and the photo would be sufficient to jab at the other Reel Reps at the meetings who have been catching yellowtails all week. We headed in at 8:00.

More importantly, he ownes some fantastic deer and turkey hunting land in Northern Missouri, catching him a fish confirms my reservation for spring and fall hunting seasons

Unhappy Broken gear

Sorry to hear about the losses. Went 0/3 last night trying to break in Fishmans new toys. Short trip. Kept struggling to stay out of the bouys.
Pleasant night overall. New friends, sweet ride. Should have put a fish in the boat . Note to self : As soon as you see the bouys @ your intended destination, immediately go to destination B. Spent half the night dodging sparklers Oh well, we'll get em next time.

Sucks about the losses, I suspect most of us have been through that in one way or another.

Sounds like an active nite though.

Sounds like a decent nite DF2.

I had a customer blow up a rod when fighting a 100# yellowfin on a 50. It was 90% angler error and 10% equipment malfunction. We ended up catching the fish after blood knotting the line to a different rod.

This was definitely angler error. When a fish is straight down and under the boat I tried to tell him to stop raising the rod past 10:00 position. When it snapped he had it hyper-flexed at the 12:00 position. I had him relax, turn the rod off to the side as much as possible, put the reel in low gear and with a slow steady crank, wind the fish up, so it wouldn't feel the need to fight. As soon as I got the leader I sunk the gaff in the head and hauled it onboard. Lucky as hell!

I've decided to build 4 new custom bent butts so that won't happen again.

You guys argued me out of the conservation mode with the we need quota numbers. Now I have turned into a "kill them for conservation" flop 'em on the deck type of guy.

Were we on the same boat, fishing on the same trip, with the same client?

Sounds almost exactly the same.

I still haven't killed more than 1 on any trip I did drop my only 1 fish per night philosophy. All the trips, so far, have only wanted to keep 1, anyway. Way too much meat!

Boboe,

Another client did the exact same thing a year ago and damn near did it too me again this year but I stopped him in time.

I just ordered all the goodies to build 4 new rods. This time I got a moderate IGFA taper so they can't overload the rod like the fast taper standup type. I also ordered the Aftco short/bent storabutts and 4 extra straight butts. This way I can build 4 rods that can be used in bent butt or straight butt style. All new windon roller guides and tips. The rods will be touch longer than I like at 6'6" but a lot more versatile that way.

I enjoy building my own rods because I know when they are done they are done right. No skimping on glue up, double wrap on guides, etc. I just built a stubbie 130# meat stick for a friend. It turned out awesome and it will pull coral heads or sink the boat if you get hung up.
