Forgot about that guess no need for a role call for this weekend since everyone will be out there soaking baits, might get an early start set up way south before the sun goes down with some deep baits and see what happens before lines in for you guys. Good Luck and catch a fatty

I saw some tinkers, they were 3 lbs. for $5.99 at the Italian Market in Philadelphia.

They were actually called Boston Mackeral or Frigate Mackeral, don't remember.

After catching thousands of Boston Mackeral I can tell you these are not Bostons. However, are the same macks they catch in NE canyons when the water is warm. Bostons prefer temps in 50-60 degrees. I bailed them one night here 3-4 weeks ago read them on the machine 2 weeks ago, but could only catch 2. I also caught 2 swords that night.

To say tinkers have been in short supply this winter is an understatement. This is probably the least I have ever seen here in all my years of swordfishing. This must have something to do with the riduculously warm weather we have been having. Normally the gulfstream is a few degrees cooler than it is now at this time of year. This may also explain why the fishing is so crappy and why so many fish are holding to the north.

Yeah, Boston Mackerel are different (but damn similar) from Tinkers. Boston mackerels are sold by the 40# flat, and are the staple bait of bandit fishermen and long liners. In Destin and ports thereabout, calling it a "tinker" will solicit confused looks. They're SPEEDOS, damnit! We will catch them some times right in the pass, but usually you have to drop large sabikis in 150-300' when you see the big spike of them on the bottom. Of course, some times it's just 4" mingos and whatnot instead. If you can find a pile of good speedos for bait, it doesn't matter what you're fishing for. Everything eats them. You'll catch snappers, groupers, jacks, tunas, or whatever you're on top of. I just wish we could find them reliably.

We had a ton of these come into the light off Jupiter tonight. I think we were in 1300-1200ft. Anyone know what they are? Looks like a Sardine, but the face is pointed and the eyes are big. I'm going to feel really stupid if these are sardines
