I have been reading this thread and can not believe the crazy outlandish suggestions and crazy dock talk that many of you are buying into. My name is Eric Orbesen and I am one of the NOAA scientists that has put these tags out and I am the individual that quality controls all data from PSAT tags. Let me say first and foremost I do not know any longliners, and I can assure you that no one in our offices have been in contact with any longliners about the two deployed PSAT tags.
Secondly, we just received the data from the two tags last week. We get the transmitted data from Argos on a monthly basis, so that means until last week we did not have any data on these fish except for the pop up location. Third, as to the fish that popped off in South Carolina. It is very interesting that there are reports that the information of where the tag popped off has given longliners new insight on where to fish. I found this remarkable because when we received the cd data we found that there was actually a transmission three days earlier, which we had not received in the email, which actually showed the tag popped off several miles from where the fish was deployed and floated up off North Carolina three days later. This means that the tag was off the fish for three days before the tag reached the Charleston Bump. This is why we prefer to get all the data before we present it. We are trying to work with the sail club on getting this information out to your group, and I can assure you that now that we have the data I will personally be more than happy to come to a meeting in January and present the data to you. I know all of you are passionate about swordfish, and all of us here at NOAA are every bit as passionate about conservation of all billfish species. Remember, we are biologists, and our duty is to learn as much as we can about these fish and do everything we can to protect the species. I myself am hurt that anyone would question or integrity, or assume there are ulterior motives to our science. Also, remember we still have one tag sitting in our office, that needs to go out. Anyone who is planning on going out and can bring us along please call us so we can get this tag out. My personal cell phone number is 786-368-7560. |

Looks like all the accusations were BS, as I suspected. Thanks for the update Eric Orbesen

Thanks Eric for setting the record straight. We are lucky these guys still
want to work with us after all this BS. I'll have to send this story to the urban legend website. I still have a few questions. So what a$$h0le$ are starting these rumors and why?? Why is it that the folks who did not contribute to our first set of tags are the ones busting our hump about this?? ---- cheers, arthur Last edited by ProfessorO; 12-24-2006 at 12:18 PM.. |

QUACK QUACK WROTE:
I have not seen or heard anything about the sat tags that were deployed.A bunch of people have asked and no one ever responded. Now I understand the tag came up and the info got into some LLers up in Carolina. Now they are crushing the fish in a place they normally did not fish but tried a set there because thats were the tag popped up.They are allowed to do that and I have no problem but it sucks that we did not see this info and the only reason they got it is because we rec guys raised the money for the tags then tagged the fish for rec research now it back fired and is helping LLers talk about irony. If any one has any thing to add I am all ears If this is all just rumor and horse poop I am sorry. CATCHING WROTE: All BS, QQ is right the tag popped up and the LL'ers crushed them where the tag popped up in an open zone I volunteered my time and emailed Eric @ NOAA and never got a response on the results I thought Sat tagging Swords was a good thing but now not so sure must be just for the guys in the click You all that asked for all of us to volunteer to pass off a fish and now you are not willing to pass off the info do not ask for our help anymore Your both intelligent men, sure you did not post without proper cause. Why don't you reveal your source for the information leak?????? |

Merry Christmas, Santa was kind considering how naughty I was.
Glad to hear you guys cleared the air. I'm not in the loop, but it seems from reading here that Arthur does a lot on a professional and personal level for swordfish conservation. It would be a shame if he backed off from his efforts. |

Thank you Eric O for facts. I appreciate your efforts. I also respect a dedication to get it right re: data. I'm planning to fish Jan. 1st - 6th, every night that is flat enough. You've probably had some invites for a ride out by some of these guys that are better sword dogs than I but if not and you want a ride pm me. If we go on a Sat Tag mission I'd like QQ on board if he's available. My ride is only a 27 footer so you decide.
