Did they actually eat right after you penned them up? They usually won't eat until they settle in, which usually takes at least a week (with a few runners in the pen to show them how it's done). You'll be able to tell if they're ready when you load a couple in the well, if not, put em back in the pen and get some fresh frisky runners.

as long as there in a big pen and stay comfortable, and you keep feeding them, they will stay alive for weeks, and if you plan to keep them for a while, dont mix any other types of baits with them, especially Runners

they're good - don't mix baits

Jimmy Lewis " the bait god" Highly recommends putting a few runners in the pen to trigger their feeding. I've done this many times and it's a proven meathod.

Don't listen to the not mixing bait or adding runners relpies; sorry. My .02.

what do you feed'em? I usually have good luck feeding shrimp to the runners but I have never tried to keep gogs longer than a few days....

Dry puppy food would be good.
The extra vitamins are better than regular dog food.

You have to think how fish live, they are constantly growing so the ratio of nutrition needs to take that into account.

Just my 2c

You should probably feed them again but they should be fine. Shrimp work well but so do many other things. Fish scraps, squid, even chum. Also, I've never had a problem mixing but it's always good to find out for yourself.

Depends on a couple factors.
Did live bait guy you bought them from use de-hooker?
(If they have been handled at all they are toast in a few days.)

How is the water quality / salinity where you keep your pen.

Unless you are close to the inlet w clean water, they will probably die.

Catch em up

yeah if you have some good current and pretty clean water they should stay alive for a while if you feed them.

I'm lucky, i'm off A1A and minutes from the inlet, so bait stays live between trips no problem.

Btw, guys if you're too busy to build your own pen, Tek (jahmussa) got some AWSOME pens. They're made with the plastic coated wire mesh, I was there today, very well built . I'm thinking of getting one to replace my getto one

Can I rent pen space for the weekend of the Rodeo , or tie mine up @ your dock for the week of the tourney? Would be willing to work out a trade or something.
Think it over,
Butch

butch, that's not a problem. Got plenty of room and minutes from hillsboro. you can use my pen or bring one of your own. Runners are so plentifull now I can even help with bait catching. I have 3 dozen gorgeous runners and about a dozen mullet i'm hoping to use friday if it lays down a little.
I need to get a few kings...word got around at work that my smoke fish dip rocks
Still want to do a swordtrip with you, but the last few trips were thrown together at the last minute

give me a call.

Talking Temp housing for one well stocked bait pen, Thanks!

Will take you up on the space @ rodeo time . Wish I had known you wanted some kings. Just gave 9 to my yard guys this afternoon, left from Sundays trip out of Stuart. Think I have a couple steaked in the freezer. Been there less than a month, your welcome to it if you want.
Gogs is what we'll be bringing down for the tourney. Most years we have no trouble getting them @ Hillsboro. This year however, the second day we were only able to get 18 gogs. Like to start the day w/ 4 or 5 dozen. Love to have a 7or 8 dozen cushion tied up @ your dock, just as an insurance policy.
Not having enough bait killed us on day two. Hit a school of small blackfins, mixed w/ bonies and burned up 18 gogs before 9:30 . Just weren't getting the same kind of action out of the runners .
Thanks for the offer, and we'll get together soon as the weather and our schedules allow . Talk to ya soon,
Butch

The best food i've used is diced bonito or skipjack tuna. I just recently pulled the ones i'd had penned up for a month (was feeding them every other day till they were full) around the bahamas for two weeks, using them along the way, and even put the used ones back in the pen if they looked decent. After being back for 5 days in dirty Ft. Lauderdale water, they are all still alive, no scabs or ick on them, and the ones with the hook marks in the back are almost healed. The bonito definately helps thier immune system, rich in protein and minerals. Just my 2 cents.
